Recharging our new On the Go water softener

We are traveling in western Arizona where the water is hard and full of iron. We set our new On the Go softener up and I checked the water the next day and all was well with the test strips indicating the lowest amount of hardness. Two weeks later, the test trip was red and was at the other end of the spectrum so I recharged the system as per the manufactures directions. After flushing I retested and the test strips were somewhere in the middle and did not get down to the original light color indicating it was working well. Three days later I checked and it looks like I need to recharge. We use very little water meaning dishes and an occasional shower. Should we have drained the tank before adding the salt and iron out. Thanks for any help in this matter. David

  • Backflush to fluff up the resins.......

Use to operate huge commercial water treatment plant and we had to backflush them.

Small portable unit is no different other than it's size.
Resins can get compacted that is why you need to occasionally backflush
  • Hi All.

I use to be an "Water Softner Installer", plus a lot of other things I installed for the same company. I don't know how your water is where you live. Ours isn't the best water either. I solved that one very easily, I installed a whole Hose Water Softner. I fill our "Fresh Water Tank" at home before we ever leave for a trip.

I also have a "Water Softner" for our Motorhomoe also. Make sure when you do a regeneration, that you really rinse the "Water Softer out very well".

It sounds like your not getting you "Water Softner" clean enough, and that's why your getting the lower readings. Also try leaving you "Table Salt" in your Water Softner a little longer.

Ours it just the Water-Stik, was less than $100 dollars. We also use a "Whole House Water Filter" on any wanter we bring on board our Motorhome. You sure can't beat Soft Water, as it does away with water spots on any glass and you also don't have to worry about any Mineral Deposits Building-Up in any of youyr Plumbing.

Good Luck. Dan & Jill & our two Small "Yorkie Kids" who love to travel as much as we do.
  • I have not figured out why, but after a recharge the water takes a couple of days before it reaches full softness. I have flushed the unit for from 10 minutes to 20 minutes and it makes no difference.

I have tried Old biscuits method of rechraginging and the salt kept clumping and was a real pain.
I now empty the water - six cups from the unit. I have a 28 oz (3 cup) container that I put 1/2 of the salt into and add water to the top. I stir that with a spatula before and during the time I pour the slurry into the softener. Repeat with the rest of the slurry. Screw the top back on and tip the unit back and forth and roll it to distribute the brine.
I let it sit for a couple of hours to overnight (doesn't seem to make any difference) and then flush.
  • Thanks for all your responses, it is very helpful. I am still waiting to hear from the manufacture. David
  • I don't have your model but I was experiencing the same problem. I even replaced the resin beads. The mfg provided additional information that was not in the original recharge instructions. The resin beads are much smaller than I expected, like a course sand and tend to get compacted, not allowing full contact with the salt solution. Their suggestion was that during the regeneration process, the cylinder be tapped, rolled, or shaken occasionally to allow full exposure of the beads to the solution. A longer soak time was also mentioned. It has helped.
  • Use a box of table salt ONLY.......

Remove the top and slowly pour salt in allowing water to overflow out top being displaced from salt.

Put the top back on..........wait 30 minutes
Rinse for 20 minutes........slow trickle about the size of a pencil

Been using ours for 6 yrs. Original resin.

Might want to 'back flush' it before regen.
Get a double female garden hose connector.
Install it on outlet..then connect garden hose and back flush for 15 mins. This will remove sediment and fluff up resin bed. Then do a regen.....Salt ONLY
  • I think the instructions say to remove only enough water that you can pour in the brine. Don't say anything about draining it.
  • We are in Yuma for the winter and have to recharge mine every week as my wife uses the washer guite often.I do not use iron out though.
