Regulated propane quick connect -who connects what?

My third trailer. All have a propane quick connect underneath the camper to plug in accessories. What do people use this for? Stove? BBQ? Anything else? Why can't you find stuff to plug into these things at RV stores?

It's a cheap, easy selling feature that manufacturers offer (because everyone else does) that buyers find pretty useless because there are very few things made that can be connected that will operate correctly without modification. It would be more useful if they would put it on the high pressure side of the regulator.

my propane firepit, and my two propane BBQ's and the outside drop down propane stove work just fine off the low pressure port. all are designed to run from a tank that has a regulator on it, so neither has an onboard regulator. seems like more and more devices are being sold this way expecting the to be hooked to a non disposable tank with regulator.

Only thing I have that won't work off the Low pressure side is the propane lantern

For me, on the high pressure side would be much less usefull.

we use it quite often. In fact I added a second port so I can have the firepit and bbq hooked up at the same time and not need to swap hoses.
  • Modifying our Coleman grill to removed the regulator was simple (in photo). Friends of ours did the same to their Weber grill no problem. What ever you want to plug into the quick-connect underneath, you can't have two regulators in series.

Use a 20-25' 3/8" hose (not 1/4") with the flexible type rubber jacket.

It's sooo convenient being able to plug your grill into the quick-connect fitting.

What modification besides a hose without a regulator. anything that runs off a bulk propane tank will run off the connection.

Not true. The equipment itself must not have an additional regulator, in other words be designed to run off the low pressure. If not the regulator must be removed which is not always possible if it is integral to the control/shutoff valve. There is a very small selection of ready made, low pressure equipment.
  • My 1990 Bounder has a hose connection before the regulator. It does not have a QD.

Coleman popups used a 15 psi outside port when they offed an outside Coleman stove, later they used 16 psi with either Vitco or Atwood hp stove.

Coachmen/Viking offer a 30 psi port on the rear of some PUs.

PUs with in/out stove used the low p port for the stove when used outside.

RVQII and sidekick grill are designed to use the low p port, Weber Q takes a slight modification.

  • Camco connector. I have a BBQ grill and also a gas firepit. However, Some are not set up. Either take regulator off youself or like the Lowes firepit I took a connector to a propane dealer and they made up the hose. Only Camco connectors seem to fit. The Lowes firepit has the regulator crimped to the hose.
  • You can plug any propane item into them. CampChef stoves or the like, barbecues ect all work. I use mine, had a hose with a quick connect made up on one end and a typical propane connection on the other so I can hook up most anything. Don't use the hose that comes with the propane item as its usually regulated and if your quick connect comes off after the trailer regulator its already regulated. Some propane items can be a problem to run if they have an internal regulator such as a colman camp stove that runs off green bottles. You need to check your line and see if it comes off before or after the trailer regulator as that dictates if you need a regulator line or not.
