Suburban furnace electrode question

I have read a bunch of posts about suburban furnace issues, but I have a little more specific question. When talking about the electrode, should the metal piece spin inside the porcelain piece? My furnace cut out over night after using for the past few day just fine. I am plugged in and my travel trailer was recently serviced my camping world. I checked everything which would not allot my furnace to not light, but only found the metal piece attached to the wire moves. Basically, I ha e the three clicks without the gas being lit, but can smell propane outside the exhaust. Any thoughts?
  • Thanks for letting everyone know how the issue was resolved! It will be helpful, when similar issues occur.

  • Turned out to be a bad ignition control module. Looks like a small board and it cost 125.00, so not the end of the world. Thank you for the help.
  • So I got a replacement, but the problem remained... I decided to drop it off and the tech quickly found out I have a broken ignition control module, so he had to order that part and should be good tomorrow... I still had a positive expirience on this site and learned a bunch about the furnace. Just hope this control module does not cost an arm and a leg.
  • So i followed the instruction from one of the video and used a 1/8 drill bit to test spacing and it was snug, but not too tight. I only have two pieces to my electrode, one mounted to the metal plate (guessing ground) and one which has the porcelain surrounding it. I think I have access to the control board, but will have to look. I will try the u plugging at the control board. I contacted the only dealer who would pick up the phone on a Sunday and he said definitely replace the electrode. So hopefully it is in stock somewhere some the weather in Northern NY is still below 40. Thank you for the help!!

Should it spin Generally no but under some conditions it might
Is it a problem if it does? Generally no

    What problem can it cause...

If the electrode is STRAIGHT and it can also SLIDE inside the insulator (the porcelain part) then the gap could change, this is a problem

And if it has been bent to adjust the gap. likewise

Too much gap is a common problem.
  • If the wire is attached to the electrode, it should still work. Make sure the electrode spacing is correct with a 1/8" gap between the HV electrode and the ground, and at least a 1/4" gap between the flame sensor electrode and ground to prevent arcing from the HV that can damage the control board. A dab of glue on the wire end could be used to keep it in place until a replacement is on hand. Also try unplugging the control cable at the board and reconnecting it a few times to help clean the contacts of any corrosion.
