Just another form of thievery: Got blasted in the rear end last week. Luckily I was traveling 40-45 (45 mph limit) when this jack___ blasts me probably doing 60-70 (estimate of LEO).Thank god I have a Super Hitch and he HAD a VW Jetta,(now in the scrap yard), after doing all the leg work for estimates,phone calls,(press 2 now 3 etc...) turns out NO insurance, ( Buzz, talk about being pissed off). Luckily the only visible damage is a 1/4" nick in plastic on bumper,and a loose license plate light.I had the frame and undercarriage all measured by a Really good shop and all's well. Still pissed off.It's just another form of theft that some jack___'s make us all pay for in the long run. DW and I weren't hurt luckily. I'm only out the $500. deductible.

Glad to hear no one important was hurt. Always laugh when there is mandatory uninsured motorist as a feature on a policy in a state that has mandatory minimum coverage. I remember back when my wife pulled into the turn lane, hit a drunk driver that was driving in the center turn lane (multiple lights per the witnesses), peed himself to boot. What's the cop do in California? Yep... writes my wife a ticket. Of course the guy got taken to jail... and we got to pay the deductible in a "no fault" state. Brilliant!

Too bad about the Jetta. My 2001 TDI Diesel Jetta just clicked over 300k miles. Always been pretty reliable with fairly minimal maintenance for all that time. Though, I did just get a $500 repair bill because the glow plug wiring harness went bad (2nd time) and so it wouldn't pass smog because the dang Check Engine light was on. I'm all for a clean environment but sometimes these environmental regulations cost an awful lot of money to people who can't afford to upgrade cars every couple of years.As far as uninsured motorist, yeah, quite the scam that these people get away with what they do and we get to pay extra on our premiums because of it. Why don't these auto insurance companies use that extra premium to start hiring some lawyers and going after these uninsured people instead of letting them just get away with it? Guess I'll answer my own question... what's the point in suing someone that doesn't have any money to begin with? The system is only setup to take from those that are trying to do the right thing.

you should have to prove one year of insurance before a car licence is given out. none cancellable. there has to be away to stop these people without being insured.

adamis is right . You can't get anything out of nothing. And the Jetta driver is bellyachin that his car is wrecked and no one to pay for it.

I think that most of these people that are uninsured probably also don't have a license or it is suspended so not certain even that would help.

KMac.. Thanks. Had no idea time and setup for a frame machine was that much. Of course, I have nothing to compare to, because I've never needed or used a shop to do that.

Glad it wasn't worse.

Walaby, the charge for setting up the frame machine and time exceeded my deductible, I'll live with the nick in bumper. Turns out this kid (22) blew a .23, still pissed, but I'll get over it.

Insurance is a joke. Here in Nv the minimum is 10k. My wife was rear ended in Mercedes SUV and the bill was $13k so our own insurance paid the bill and took the 10k and supposedly went after the responsible party for the rest.

That is best solution, until insurance company jacks up your rate for filing a claim. If there was a way to control that, what you suggest is really a better solution... Bottom line, Im responsible for me, and he's responsible for him. Sucks if he rolls the dice and loses, but it is what it is.

A better solution might be for everyone to have insurance to pay for their own stuff, then there is no question of how things get paid. If the "other" guy has no insurance, tuff, it just means he has a total loss. Frankly the idea of liability insurance is nothing but a way to pad the pockets of lawyers.
As far as theft goes, what you describe is no different than someone running around without health insurance. Someone still has to pay, it just gets buried in the premiums that the rest of us, who do have health insurance, pay.

When we were hit by an uninsured kid, we had to pay our $500 deductible for the repairs, however, our insurance company filed a lien with the State of Washington and he could not renew his driver's license until he had repaid. He paid the money to our insurance company and they sent us a check.

If the only damage was a nick in plastic bumper and a loose license plate light, why even file a claim? Im assuming based on spending $500 deductible, that you replaced the bumper?

I agree with the comments about uninsured motorists, but I personally would have not repaired such little damage, unless Im missing something.

I have a simple solution,,
Toss the uninsured accident causing schmuck into prison and make them work hard labour until they earn enough to pay for all the damages..

Make sure to discuss with your insurance "Loss of value". It will now show up on carfax as having been in an accident when you go to sell/trade, and you'll get less for it.
I have State Farm, and my agent informed me of this when I had a small accident involving a road rage/rush jack___ in a subaru try and cut me of when I was fully loaded.
Normally no one will tell you about this from your insurance company because they of course want to keep their costs down, but I've had the same agent for over 25 years.
