06 Ford E350 V10 losing power

I just got home after buying a nice 06 E350 12 Pax van.
i towed my Jeep home and it did a great job. The 5 speed torqueshift is a huge improvement over the old 4 sp.
The last 5 miles of the 120 mi trip, I was coming up a decent hill and the engine began cutting out and losing power. It seemed like it did it at partial throttle because if I pushed it to the floor and seemed normal until I let off and it would cut out again.
I pretty sure the trans is not the problem as it seemed to function ok.
It almost seems like fuel starvation so I was thinking a bad fuel filter, but giving it full throttle seemed to help so that didn't make sense.
Also, I got an amber "wrench" symbol on the dash, which I assume maint. req.
I made it home and turned it off and restarted it and the wrench symbol was gone.
I haven't driven it again yet so not sure if it still does it.
Any ideas or common issues on the V10 that would cause this?
Thanks

  • Weill luck was in my favor for a change.
Took the van to my mechanic and it turned out to be a throttle pos sensor, so just over $100 I'm back in business.
Apparently there is one on the go pedal and the bad one was on the throttle body.
Thanks for all the great input.

Good chance it has nothing to do with fuel system.

Intermittent fuel pumps often simply refuse to work when hot, like stopping somewhere after driving a while then no restart..

Clogged fuel filters don't fix themselves so I would rule that out.

The most likely culprit is the COPS (Coil over Plugs), you most likely have one of them going bad and they are a real pain when they start going bad.

The easiest way to find the bad one is to buy a new one and use it one every cylinder one at a time until you locate the bad one.

COPS may or in my case may not set the CEL but it can leave a misfire code on the computer sometimes.

Before randomly changing parts I would suggest taking it somewhere that can RELIABLY scan your vehicle to find out the codes...
  • That also sounds like the symptoms of your throttle body getting stuck. That year van has drive-by-wire, so pushing the "gas" pedal only requests more air and fuel, but the electronic butterfly does the work. Its common for those things to carbon-up when only used lightly, which causes the buttefly to bind up and not open up in a linear fashion.
  • It`s also possible you have a coil on the way out! very common failure on Fords.
  • Thanks Flying R
I just drove it up the mountain for about 10 miles and it ran perfect.
It has just over 80k mi and I had over 1/2 tank of fuel when it happened.
I'll take it to my mechanic tomorrow.
  • I don't think it will go away, mine started acting up when I got close to a 1/4 tank. I would take it to garage or even a parts store to have the codes read to see what the problem is first, then go from there. You do not need to go to a Ford dealer to get the codes read, most all garages have code readers. As a matter of fact, I took my motorhome to Sam Galloway Ford in Ft. Myers and they keeped my motorhome, while on vacation, for about 6 weeks putting a new head on, under warranty. When I drove away from the dealership, I still had the problem. I then took it to an independent garage and had the codes read. The garage said they could replace the pump, but it would cost over $750.00, and it would be best to have ford fix it. So, I took it to a ford dealer in Arcada,FL. they agreed it was the pump and replaced it under warranty. I have not had a problem since then and it runs like a raped ape. That work was done in 06, the motorhome was 7 months old and had about 1500 mile on it.
  • Thanks
Is it intermittent or will it get worse?
What is the cost to replace?
I have a 30 day warranty on the powertrain but have to take it where I bought it, 120 mi away.
I wonder if that 30 day warranty would cover a fuel pump?
  • Take it to a garage to have codes read, dollar to a donut it'll tell you low fuel rail presure, which is a fuel pump problem. My 06 V10 acted like that and that was the fix.
