I am not sure how you don't pull some valuable information out of the tests. Putting the three different trucks through the same pulling regiment and seeing how they perform I think is absolutely valuable in making buying decisions. Some guys may put looks over function, and braking performance over engine performance or they will buy the brand they always have. Either way, the information is there for your use without going to three different dealers and begging to pull a trailer with their new truck as a demo.
Where the tests start to become less valuable is when things get too subjective. I like to see the numbers and leave subjective opinions out of it or in a section that is nothing but subjective thoughts. I still would like to see coolant temps, tranny temps and EGTs continually during the tests.
I look forward to seeing the outcome.
I also love the tests. They have some fairly practical information, such as the mpg comparisons and things of that nature. Sure, they are not the be-all-end-all, but I like reading what they have to say. My only hesitation is that they make me feel like I might have missed my calling in life -- I would love to have been a vehicle tester! - ksssExplorerI am not sure how you don't pull some valuable information out of the tests. I do however enjoy seeing the results and I'm sure when I do purchase my next truck those results will at least give me some idea of what level of performance each truck has to the others.
I am interested how the 6.4 hemi is going to do. I feel like I have a pretty good idea how the rest of them are going to do relative to each other. I do wish Ram would have paired the 6.4 with the 8 speed. I think it might be handicapped a little bit by it's taller ratios vs Ford and GM. The increased power may very well overcome that but I think the 8 speed would be a noticeable improvement. ib516 wrote:

Same here...- hawkeye-08Explorer IIIFolks too often use the tests to try and convince other folks that they bought the best truck... seems they spend too much time trying to convince others, makes their confidence in their choice rather suspect... like they are trying to convince themselves that they truck is good... perhaps even when they don't really like it. I look at the tests as another piece of information, not the only answer.

I love the tests- For me performance is the number one factor in which truck I buy. Acceleration, braking performance, mpg, payload capacity, GCWR, ride characteristics... all factor into the purchasing decision.
I love my GM truck but its about time for a new one and I would love to get something different- so these articles are great!
How much are you wanting for that worn out California truck you have now? Sounds like it needs to be put out to pasture up here in the Northwest.. - fly-boyExplorerI love the tests- For me performance is the number one factor in which truck I buy. This is all intestesting to a point, BUT, if I had listened to all the test hype and decided to purchase the one that "won" all of it...I wouldn't have purchased the 3rd. place Dodge in 2010...Test are nice and for the loyalist of each brand, I guess if their brand "win's", it makes for a lot of interesting and sometimes, ugly, rude, hateful post..but that's life as we know it today on the internet...I would think that Ford with the most TQ and HP should "win" in the 3/4 ton/1 ton category, or Chevy may fool them all again,....Ram? I KNOW what it'll do...won't break a 0 to 60 race, but that's not what I'm into...or again, in 2013 when I purchased truck in my sig, I would have purchased another Chevy.
Test are nice for loyalist and "fan boy's"...other than that, just media information for the masses.....
:h :h :h
How do you know you would not have been happier with the first place truck? Or that the 1st place truck would have saved you a bunch of money in fuel? Or that the 1st place truck would have rode smoother?
:h:h:h
Never said that I wouldn't be any of the above:h..I owned 3 Chevy D/A's. I HAD the #1 truck that won all the shoot out's...I was happy with the Chevy's and I'm happy with the Ram...didn't know if I would be after dropping the Chevy D/A combo..BUT, I was/am happy with the Ram..
Don't know how the 1st. place truck would have saved me a bunch of money:h..comparing like vehicles and trim levels, in and around my area, the Ram was/is cheaper than the Chevy AND the Ford...but that had nothing to do with it....If I'd wanted the Chevy I went with it, I liked the LOOKS of the Ram, inside and out, better than I did the Chevy. Believe it or not, at the time, that was a BIG point in favor of the Ram...The Chevy's from 99' to 07.5, even 2010 hadn't changed that much in looks, inside or out and I alway's had the LTZ trim level.
Save me money in fuel?....heck when purchasing a 1 ton crew cab dually, towing a 5er with a GVW of 16,950#, in "MY" personal opinion, an increase in mpg would be nice, but was at the bottom of my "list" of "must have" things.... Maybe with a 1/2 ton truck, and even a 3/4 ton truck, but in "MY" case, purchasing a 1 ton crew cab, long bed, 4X4 Dually, towing heavy ....mpg isn't "at the top of the list"...having owned and driven an 05' and 07.5' Chevy Duallys in cc/lb/4X4/D/A configuration in LTZ trim, again, it's nice to get high mpg, but nothing I expect, like one would with a car...
I don't expect a 1 ton crew cab, long bed, 4X4 dually to ride TOO good, but am super impressed with how smooth this truck rides for a 1 ton crew cab dually......the wife and I love driving it.The last Chevy cc/lb dually I owned also was comfortable, but we're not talking 1/2 or 3/4 ton trucks here....
Where did I say anything about any of the above???? All I stated was, "IF", test like we're talking about, made THAT MUCH of an impression on me....I would have NEVER purchased a Ram..or for that matter, 2nd. place, ie, a Ford....BUT, the test have no input on what I purchase, that's all I was saying...except for the fact that if I ever give up on Ram, then I'll probably go back to a Chevy....even if Ford won the test..
The test have ZERO bearing on what truck "I" purchase, no matter what place it came in and some silly test...I owned the "1st place" truck for years, (ie Chevy D/A), loved it, won't say anything bad about it, just like the looks of the Ram better...the Cummins is also a great engine and coupled to the medium duty tranny (Aisin), a truck that works fine for me at this time:)
We're still buddies, right:) - ib516Explorer III am interested in the test report because I like trucks, and seeing how they perform. I find it very interesting.
- LessmoreExplorer IIComparison tests can be good info for a prospective buyer to check out. They can provide an opportunity to compare one vs another on the potential purchase list.
Comparing different criteria, looking at pictures of similar features and reviewing comparative performance numbers, for example acceleration, braking, mpg with load, solo can be of value.
It's not the end all, but comparison testing is an important tool to consider when determining which product makes most sense for the purchaser.
There is that element of 'gettin' ammo' for brand wars, that is for sure. Unfortunately that mentality among some, will always be there, it appears.
But the brand war deal should be of little significance for the wise consumer. Fanboys after all...usually don't want facts to get in the way of their blind loyalties. Their opinion has little credibility.
