I tryed to find a micro/convection as a first solution... they were all too small inside to bake a pizza. The camper convection oven will easily do a 14" the one in the house will do a 16".

The micro convection ovens that I liked were power hogs...

Obviously our needs and life style activities are different.

For a long time our needs mirrored yours. Truck camper camping from 1969 to 2000 was a lot different for us... we had more dependents, we stayed in campgrounds most of the time and needed the bath houses, water and electric connections, etc. and of course we had to stretch our money.

Starting at the end of 2002 our needs changed radically.

We stopped going to campgrounds because of my asthma and campfire smoke, a bonus avoiding noise, crowds, and we don't need or miss the dirty bath houses, etc

Boondocking and stealth camping became our norm... becoming self sufficiant as well as self contained became essential. We want to go as many days as possible without looking for dump stations and water.

Water, clean and potable is our #1 priority

Conserving our holding tank space is #2 priority.

Propane conservation is #3

Cooking in skillets, pots and pans requires washing them... requiring a possible cutting a day or more from our water supply and waste containment,


We take 3 minute "navy" showers to conserve water and grey tank... at meals we use paper plates and bowels, and plastic cups and tableware. I cook on foil so that it can be recycled and save water,

We bought beautiful new cookware and a wok when whe we ordered this camper in 2002... wee still haul it... but haven't used it one time in our 1181 nights on the road....Goodwill will some day get them with the bubble wrap still between them.

By 2005 we were set in our new way of "camper use"... without noticing we cut back to two meals a day... year around...a snack now and then, metabilism changes do that... it sneaks up on you. It's OK though... I was fat. I've lost 53 pounds without dieting... but I don't eat any of the things that JumboJet still sees as essential (our heart Dr crossed them of for us (old folk)... he pointed out there are few very fat or very tall... very old people.... and gave us a choice... we trust him... Janet dropped 35.)

We broil and bake.... don't have a deep fryer, avoid fatty foods.... and we avoid wahing pots, pans, and dishes.

Enjoy your style just as we have... and don't be afraid to change styles as life flies by...

Actually, the fridge is on propane 24/7 for up to 6 months at a time.

and, we use our built in propane generator for the airconditioner and microwave. We can now run the microwave for most of our needs on the inverter... and sunlight of course.

We seldom use the furnace and the PlatCat sips propane.

We are 3 season campers... if it gets cold or snows in late fall or early spring we move furthur south, if it gets bitter cold at high altitudes we work our way back down.

Of course, if it gets to hot we head north or find high mountains.

Thanks Sleepy for another one of your DIY projecs and posting it, here. Hopefully it will get some consideration for the TC University, too.

As usual, you have it well researched and the implementation, superb. While I do use my stove and oven more than most and would never remove it, I do recognize the need, for some, to go the path you did.

This is again an informative thread. As I can see from the comments it is an individual choice on how each of us does things. I have found that I always take away new and benefitical info. I like that KILL A WATT meter, going to get one. I remmeeber those cup coils...now where did I put mine or maybe it is at my Dad's place will check in Novemeber.

I think I will go with a slide stove top (propane) and micro (great to cook corn and broc plus DW likes bacon that way).

The whole idea of enuf battery, inverter and solar is appealing with gen back up...I am pursueing this. Thx for the fine report and the education.

LOL, that's the only time my stove gets used too, which is prior to every trip because I always turn off the propane bottle when I get home.
