28,500 lbs Ford vs Ram 1 ton DRW

VIDEO

$80,115 MSRP Ram 3500 385hp/930tq, 4.10 rear, 5690# payload as configured, 11 brake applications on the way down.
2.7 mpg and 11 min 41 sec on the uphill portion.

$83,015 MSRP Ford F350 450hp/935tq, 4.10 rear, 5400# payload as configured, 10 brake applications on the way down,
2.4 mpg and 11 min 43 sec on the uphill portion.

Basically a tie.

Anyone else surprised the 65hp advantage the Ford has didn't result in a quicker time? It sure did in the drag race they did.

    You tow 30k lb trailer on the road for many miles with SRW pickups?


    All I am saying that if I had to get a CDL to tow a 30k trailer on a regular basis.

    I would rather do it in this...



    with a flatbed, than a lighter 3500 pick up.


    It is funny how many of the weight police jump on half ton owners for towing something that weighs less than twice as much as their truck saying the tail will wag the dog even though it is within its ratings, but have no problems with a 3500 towing something that weighs almost three and a half times more than it just because their favorite brand rates it that high.

    Pick up trucks work great to tow 30,000 lb trailers. For light loads like that I will usually leave the big truck parked and use a SRW pick up. However, the tandem dually gooseneck trailer we have is not really built to handle the weight. The axles and suspension need regular repair. I think my next gooseneck will be a tridem dually.

    Having had many Eagle Ford oilfield customers and working many years driving around to see them everyday, I have probably only seen a 1 ton tow more than 20k less then a handful of times. Most loads over that are moved by medium and heavy duty trucks with a CDL driver since towing a trailer over 26,001 lbs in Texas and most states requires one.

    I don't think GM is in any HP/TQ wars like Ford and Ram are. They have only increased output with every new version(like most things that get updated) and not year over year like Ram and Ford seem to be doing.

    Don't get me wrong. I would probably never own a GM product either, but my bias against owning one does not trump what I think is a good or bad decision. I can also like one decision while disliking another. What I think is good or bad does not change depending on the company that makes it.

    NO WAY that is true. I tow 23-25K combined with my 15 RAM and it handles it all within the SAE ratings. If GM could get SAE to rate them at 30K towing they sure the HE!! would. There are plenty of people out there that tow heavy that are and are not RVers. Plain and simple the Allison is at the end of it's power limits.

    I agree with transamz9, I am sure I can out pull you on any grade you choose at any weight you choose. ONE major reasons I have 6 gears and you have 4 with a horrible 3-4 shift.


    I pull over 30K combined with a Duramax. No issues to date. Pulls great.

    I don't think he ever said it wouldn't do it. I believe he just stated his opinion as to why GM don't rate it for more. Hell, I towed around 27000 combined for years with an 05 2500 with a Bully Dog running on "extreme" with stock trans and he's still running strong and still out running them new Fords.

    I guess name the ONLY big 3 diesel pickup that has not changed their engine displacement or engines (plural) completely and has not changed their transmission either in what? 17 years now?


    The op asked a question, GM isn't even trying to answer it so some of us have ventured a guess. Since you don't like the guesses so far what is your favorite answer to the question? Please enlighten us.

    I will say that I have been noticing hot shots pulling some pretty impressive trailers behind their Fords and Rams and they seem to be doing the job so far.


    I usually see RAM's pulling Ford's :B

Having had many Eagle Ford oilfield customers and working many years driving around to see them everyday, I have probably only seen a 1 ton tow more than 20k less then a handful of times. Most loads over that are moved by medium and heavy duty trucks with a CDL driver since towing a trailer over 26,001 lbs in Texas and most states requires one.

I don't think GM is in any HP/TQ wars like Ford and Ram are. They have only increased output with every new version(like most things that get updated) and not year over year like Ram and Ford seem to be doing.

Don't get me wrong. I would probably never own a GM product either, but my bias against owning one does not trump what I think is a good or bad decision. I can also like one decision while disliking another. I don't think GM is in any HP/TQ wars like Ford and Ram are. They have only increased output with every new version(like most things that get updated) and not year over year like Ram and Ford seem to be doing.

I can also like one decision while disliking another. IMO, if the Allison 1000 transmission is what is holding GM back from towing over 23k and they really wanted to tow more to be in this pissing match. Then they could just slap an Allison 2000/2500 series in the GM trucks. Externally it is identical to the 1000, but with beefier internals.
