'99 S & S camper on '02 Ford Superdty Longbed

Hi We are looking at buying our first truck camper and have been doing a lot of research about the fit issues with older campers and '99 through 2007 Ford trucks because of the tailgate opening and cab height. We have our eyes on a 1999 9.5 S & S camper that looks really clean, but it is 5.5 hours away. We have an opportunity to go see it this week, but unfortunately the guy is out of town for family related medical issues and wouldn't be able to measure it for us until he gets back which would be about the same time we would be getting there. We don't want to make a wasted trip so we were wondering if anyone out there has this year and length camper on the '99 to '07 Ford Super duty long bed truck? I guess if you do that means it will fit through the tailgate opening, but did you need to raise it to clear the cab? Would also be interested in total length of the camper as we will be towing a trailer and have only so much clearance, we don't want to use a stinger. Some of the 9.5 campers we have seen measure 10 feet, wonder what is up with that?? FYI he has a 2012 Chevy 3500 and said he didn't have any issues. Thanks in advance for any insight :)

  • I have a 99 S&S 9.5 in my 2015 f350. It fits fine you just need to raise up to clear the cab.
  • Don't forget a rubber bed mat to prevent camper movement. If you need the pink foam to raise the camper you can stop at a Tractor Supply and pick up a rubber mat for a horse/cow stall to lay on top of the pink foam to prevent the camper sliding on the foam.
  • Thanks everyone. Sounds like we should be able to make this work for us. We'll go prepared with some material to give it enough lift to clear the cab and after a thorough go thru hopefully be hauling it home with us!
  • You shouldn't have any tailgate width issues. They used to all be 65"... Chevy started tapering their boxes in 1988, narrowing the tailgate opening and the camper manufacturers started shaving a few inches at that time so they would fit. Dodge started tapering their boxes in 1994 and Ford in 1998.
By 1999 every camper maker had to have taken care of the width issue or they wouldn't fit anyone's new trucks.
Width fitment problems are primarily with 1987 and older campers - most of which have rotted away!
For height the easiest thing is to hit the nearest Home Depot and grab a sheet of 4x8 2" thick pink hard foam insulation. It's cheap, weighs nothing, isn't slippery, and doesn't crush because the load os spread out over the whole thing. Get two if one isn't enough.

You may notice I have a 1987 camper on a tapered, narrow-tailgate '99 truck. (which is why I know so much about this!)
I had to section the fiberglass wet-bath enclosure and 'glass it back together to shave 2" at the lower passenger side, but many campers only need some wood parts cut a little to gain a little clearance, sometimes it's quite easy to make them fit. It's only the part that is inside the box and behind the wheel well, there's no outside skin bodywork to do.
  • My 2000 9.5 S&S fits just fine in my 2000 F250 The tail gate is out and I have a 2x6 flat frame and a 1 1/2" pink foam in the bed to lift the tc over the cab for clearance and double as cold weather insulation. Works great.

    Shalen,

I have a 2001 S&S 9.5 on my 2006 Ford F350 diesel longbed XLT with a supercab. We don't need to do anything special to fit it in the bed. Of course the tailgate is removed.
From front bumper to rear of camper, we measure 23 feet in length. That includes approximately 22 inches of overage.
Please keep in mind that our fully loaded and ready to go camper and truck combo with two adults is 12100 pounds. The manufacturer's weight sticker on the left rear of my camper says 3056 pounds. However, our wet weight is 4150 pounds. They are heavy but it suits our lifestyle at this point.
Be prepared for rot around the front windows. We rebuilt ours.
Again, I love our rig. It works for us.
    Good Luck.

Thanks for the reply We are fortunate to have found this camper as it is one without the front windows! It's good to hear you haven't had any fit issues too. Since this is a '99 camper, the year Ford changed their design we're still hoping to hear from someone with a pre 2000 model on our style bed. Happy camping :)
  • We love our 2004 S&S 8.5. We do need spacers on our 1999 Super Duty F350 to clear the cab. I made mine out of 4" x 4"s. I am not clear on the years for the changes. I purposely bought the 8.5 so I have easy access to the hitch, and no need for the extended hitch. Personal choice.

I agree they are a bit on the heavy side, and you have to look close for dry rot. I also had to repair mine. So be sure to check the front corners carefully.
  • Yep, those S&S are good, but they are heavy. Those windows look really cool though. A few minor drawbacks, just like anything else.
