- ivbinconnedExplorer IIAhh. And here we all thought you needed 600 hp to drag your RV!

Really Davis. I guess in a shop with a dyno you could test stock and the aftermarket. Then we'd know.
Well I tested it at the track and two years took the truck to the NHRA division6 championships. - ivbinconnedExplorer IIReally Davis. I guess in a shop with a dyno you could test stock and the aftermarket. Then we'd know.
- S_DavisExplorerI don't know about the Ram but I have had my 2009 chevy at about 600hp on the stock intake and no issues with lack of air.
- 1stgenfarmboyExplorerIf you want to put one on it won't hurt anything, in fact it " could " help a thing or two with a mild tune, will you feel it NO, but what ever you do get a system that is a true " COLD " air system.
once you start doing mods there is always a choke point, it may be coming in........it may be going out.
PS they do look cool...........so you have that. - ShinerBockExplorerHere is the old article I remember reading a while back comparing and dyno testing 5 different intakes. In summary, not all increase power and a closed box intake is better than an open one.
Intake Comparo: 6.6L Chevy Duramax Intake Systems Put To The Test - ShinerBockExplorerIn the case of power gains, it depends on the stock vehicles and what intake is used. For most newer trucks, there is none.
As far as the Rams, removing the restrictions did help lower my EGTs. - ScottGNomadRepeated dyno testing has shown that removing the baffle or the silencer ring has no effect on power output at all.
Even using a free breathing air cleaner only has minimal effect on a stock or near stock engine and then only at 3000 RPM - I did this dyno testing myself.
I am not anti-modification but there's a lot of hype in the market. - ShinerBockExplorerThat is not a very good question to ask in this forum since most seem to be anti-modification yet some how they act as experts on the matter. Even worse are those that apply gasoline engine physics to diesel engine physics. Then there is the fact that most benefits of an intake are not noticed on a stock tune.
Intakes do more than just gain hp with a diesel. One of the major benefits is also lowering EGT's which need to be kept in check when driving a tuned diesel. Intakes can also increase efficiency of a diesel engine, depending on how restrictive the factory set up is, by allowing the air to flow easier.
In the case of the current Ram's, there is a huge restriction in the intake piping in the form of a baffle(see pic below) to silence the turbo noise. It is in the pipe between the intake box and turbo. Fortunately it can be easily removed.
If you do end up getting and intake, I recommend the AFE Momentum with the Pro-Guard 7 filter. I bought it early on so it is somewhat paying for itself since I am not buying air filters, but the biggest benefit was keeping my EGTs in check a little better than the stock box. - theoldwizard1Explorer IIThe biggest problem with gauze and oil air filters (like K&N) is the get dirty quickly. If you live in a dusty area, they can get so dirt in under 10,000 mile that your engine will not start.
When you switch to a gauze and oil air filter, you are signing yourself up for a lot of maintenance which is why the auto industry does NOT use them !
