Awning not working- Controller or motor?

After taking my camper out of storage this year, my awning fails to work.

When I push the button, there's a small load which drops the volts 1/2 volt when plugged in.

I tried to manually open it, but the nut spins freely on the crank outside. I can't get the plastics off since they screws are on the backside. I tried to undo the set screw holding the awning to the shaft in an attempt to lower the arm manually...but the dang set crew sheared off at the threads.

I pulled the switch panel out and there's a controller AC608-187-F. It's warm to the touch. I check voltage going out when pressing the button and there is voltage going out of each lead (forward and reverse) and there's residual voltage when I let off the button that seems to drop slowly (.5 amp).

I assume it's a relay so the load isn't going through the switch? Is there more in there?

Any thoughts what to do? If the motor was shorted out, wouldn't the fuse pop when holding the button? If the wire had a break, why would there be a load when I pushed the button? I can't get to the motor to test there either. When the awning has stuck in the past, the load is much higher and dims the lights. I can rock the awning by hand and it usually jostles it free. The camper is only 4 years old and not a whole lot of awning usage in the time. I can't believe the motor would be shot. Is there something else I am missing?

  • You can get them on Ebay for $110, and it has a metal housing instead of a plastic one.
  • Yea, not sure how the water was getting in. Only thing I could think was where the wires enter there's a little rubber block that maybe water was getting in.

I keep it indoors 80% of the time too, including 100% from November to May. It started sticking while under warranty and had brought it in. They turned the nut and said it's fine. Ever since then I just shake the awning by hand a little when it sticks and it frees it up. I see now that the gunk was probably in there since day 1.

@Lynnmor, that motor looks pretty dang close, but it's opposite. I don't know if you post a LH or RH motor, but the opposite side should work. The only difference that I see is there is no manual nut on the car openers.

The OEM motor is $140, which seems like highway robbery for a small motor that fails this easily.

  • Wow, the outside condenser fan that I took apart after 13 years outdoors 24x7 looked to be in better condition than that thing after 4 years. I wonder what kind of design flaw or cost optimization caused it to be so bad.
  • Thanks for taking the time to post the fix! I wish more people would do that!
  • Got home earlier enough to take a second look at it.

I was able to take the bolt holding it to the arm off. That arm is under some tension! Was able to flip it over then and pull all the screws out. Tested the wires at the motor and I had voltage there. Pulled the motor off and it was soaked inside. Could barely get the housing off. Cleaned it up the best I could and it actually works. I'll order up a new one, but the motor being jammed with crud was the problem.

Put it all back together and the awning opens and closes like it should.

  • Batteries are fine and I have a hard wired volt-meter to monitor voltage. This happens when plugged in as well.
  • Are your batteries also 4 yrs old? When did you last check the water levels? Could be something simple like dead batteries. Sounds like a 12 volt issue to me. Awning will not work if batteries are low. Might need new ones.
