X10!
There is a big difference in a product that is nothing more than a perfume to try and 'cover up' a smell.
Versus a product that does this:
Campa-Chem-'Original'
"The most powerful odor control available
Liquefies waste and breaks down tissue fast to prevent clogging
Powerful detergents clean tank walls and drain lines"
Deodorizers do not do any of the above.
I ran out of Campa-Chem one time and a fellow camper gave me a packet of his 'o naturalle' deodorizer. OMG the overpowering smell of gawd awful perfume in my coach had me running to the dump to get rid of it! :B - allen8106ExplorerWe use nothing, just flush the tanks well at the end of each trip. It works.

- rbpruExplorer IIWe use the little dissolving packets you dump in the toilet. Brand does not seem to matter.
- lanerdExplorer III'm a plain water fan. Try it, maybe you won't need a deodorizer. Typically, when you do have an odor, you might have a problem with a bad seal, plugged vent, or a leak. If and when you do discover an odor, see if you can find out exactly where it is coming from. Always remember to turn off the exhaust fan when you flush the toilet.
When traveling, I put a cup of liquid laundry detergent (Oxy-Clean) an a cap full of Calgon water softener in both tanks along with about 5 gallons of water. When traveling, the soapy solution will slosh around in your tank. Once at my destination, I will drain and flush with fresh water.
I have been doing this for years....no odors and my tank sensors work perfectly.
So, if you don't have an odor now, no need to flush $$ down the drain with deodorizers. Use plenty of fresh water (in the toilet) to flush out the tanks and clean them with the laundry soap.
Hope this helps
Ron - old_guyExplorerHappy Camper bar none. I have used every thing on the market. found Happy camper and threw every thing else in the garbage. Happy Camper works and works and works.
- scbwrExplorer III'm a Happy Campers fan. No harsh chemicals and it works!
- STANG23LExplorerThe same chemicals are used in the portable toilet industry. We've used both liquid and packet versions in the family biz. Settled on packets as they are much less of a mess! And you do not need much water for the casing to dissolve. Just make sure you have a couple gallons of water in the tank.
As far as smell they have all seemed to do a pretty good job. - DutchmenSportExplorerI've used Thetford and Aqua Chem over the years. As far as odor, both do OK.
I clean my tanks pretty well at the end of each trip. I flush water until nothing brown comes out. Then we primarily use nothing, except dish washing water when we do dishes, we flush it down the potty. Haven't had odors in a long time.
But a couple weeks ago we purchased a new box of Thetford with the little digestable bags for a "just in case" moment. We did drop one in the tank on our way home last week-end with a couple gallons of water to slosh around. No odors, just felt it would help since it would be a couple more weeks before going out again and it's REALLY hot now, and any little bit of (anything) in the black tank can begin to smell real bad in a short time in this heat. No problem when continuously using the camper and dumping regularly, But when sitting, we like to keep a deodorizer in there.
Works for us. They all do a pretty good job of keeping odors down. Pick the one that strikes your attention and just try it. If it don't work to your satisfaction, try something different next time.
You'll eventually switch over to dishwashing liquid too. - GaryWTExplorerWe use the aqua Chem from Walmart, cheap enough and we are happy with it. There are hundreds of products and methods and many are happy with which ever works for them.
