- C_SchomerExplorerThe highest I run the TST for towing is 3/3/3 and I can go over the Az mtns in 6th at 67 mph with my 15k 5er. That's plenty for me! Craig

My 6.0 PSD always had enough power that I never thought about modifying it. Now my 6.7 Cummins is even more powerful and I have no plans on making any changes. Can I ask how much you are towing and at what speeds? I never had problems comfortably holding the speed limit over any of the I-5 or Cascade passes with 12k lbs added to the truck. I did slow slightly for some of the passes through the Rockies and Sierras, but that was more due to the comfort of my DW than the comfort of the engine.
OP here...Many times you read where many have their HP upped. I've got an older (2001) 5.9 that serves me well but when I have to replace stuff I'm planning on the "beefed up" version. There have been times when I wish I had more power, especially when we were pulling a 10,000 5th wheel. Our latest is a 7,000 pound trailer, so no worries. I don't need to be the first one up the hill. My kid is just the opposite. He says laughingly "that he can pull me sideways up hills I struggle with".
Just interested in what people have when they say "bombed" for towing. - TXicemanExplorer IISignature truck is bone-stock and does a fantastic job towing the trailer.
Ken - ksssExplorerI had the computer remapped for a 60 hp bump in my LBZ. It is about perfect. The difference I noticed was the throttle response is much better. I can still keep it cool, very happy with it. I have had set like this for the last 50K and no issues.
- atreisExplorerVery lightly - added Timbrens. That's it.
- DuctapeExplorerMy experience with diesels has been that the power train components are pretty well matched, so when you tune it up it exposes weakness in other areas. EG trans or intercooler. I have had better results tuning for things like transmission shift timing and engine throttle response without the aforementioned downsides.
After doing a few repairs far from home I tend to do fewer mods on vehicles I use for traveling. - fla-gypsyExplorerMy gasoline powered 6.8L/4.10 rear came just like I wanted it. No need to throw $$ at it.

Nah, some trucks are great towing platforms, but are a bit underpowered. Why spend big bucks buying a new truck when for less than $1000 you can cure that little shortcoming?
If you need 'enhancements' then might want to reconsider what you are towing OR what you are towing with
My 2001 Dodge dually diesel, with 90,000 miles, does an admirable job, but with 245 hp from the factory it is pretty slow on steep climbs.
I could spend $20,000 for a new truck, or spend some money on a Edge EZ, 90 hp injectors, and a tunnel ram. For around $1000, I have about 150 more hp, more torque, and the engine is still well understressed. Now I can easily pull hills and I never feel like the truck is struggling.
And it returns between 10-11 mpg while pulling my 15,000 lb. toyhauler.
We all wish it was only $20,000 for a new one especially when you talk 1 ton with a few goodies on it for towing. Even with a decent trade it would still be a dream. My dad bought a 2014 3500 CTD quad cab long bed Laramie and it was $63,000 MSRP...about $35,000 after a 2004 CTD 3500 trade in and employee discount. But now he has 6 years of warrantee with 385 hp and 850 ft lbs of torque and a drive line that will handle it.
My brother on the other hand has a highly modified CTD in a 2007.5 3500 quad cab long bed and can push it until the tranny starts to slip. display will show him how much to push it and when to back off.
Mine while not a diesel, is twin turbo'd and will stay stock with its 365 hp and 420 torque.
