My new trailer is to be fitted with truck tires - I'm assuming 10 ply LT tires of some kind. It's a standard feature and not a request on my part.
What are the thoughts on doing this? The trailer GVWR is 7000 lbs, twin 3500 lbs axles.
My first thoughts is that they would be better tires than ST or trailer tires.
A trailer with a 7000 GVWR has a 1750 lb tire requirement now add 20 percent for a good reserve capacity. Your looking at a tire with 2100 lbs capacity for your trailer.
Their are a few 15" LT C and D tires out here that fit in that requirements however those 3500 lb axles sure don't need a 16" LT E at 2680 or 3042 lbs capacity. I've found out the hard way trailers unlike our trucks can have too much tire for best tire performance/handling and and long term reliability.
We used P (passenger) and LT (truck tires)many years before tire makers gave us a cheaper low cost ST tire for our trailers.
I do know it's a 16" BF Goodrich, but I don't know the exact size.
I'm assuming also these go to 80PSI for that max load, so inflation will be important to hold down any bounce from running too "hard". The axles also have shocks, which should help alot I imagine.
Mainly I ask the question because I was unsure if trailer tires really offer anything other than cheaper price and lower weight. If a truck tire offers more longevity, or is heavier duty, or has tremendous capacity, at the expense of price, but no other downsides, then I'm OK with it.
