- JIMNLINExplorer IIIWebsite input go the way of the wind.
GM 1500HD went from '00 to I know '06 as I saved this from GM '06 ordering guide.
It had a 8600 GVWR with 6084 RAWR and a 4500 FAWR with 8 lug axles load E tires and wheels.
It came with up to a 10300 lb tow rating and a 3130 lb payload - BenKExplorerPS...to make it even more confusing for those who only understand marketing badging...the
body on the 'half ton' and the '3/4 ton' Suburban is EXACTLY the same
The difference is underneath the skin...frame, suspension, drive train, etc
Ditto most pickup too - BenKExplorerAlways say to use their GVWR's instead of marketing badging...but seems most
everyone insist on using the confusing marketing badges
That 1500HD the OP mentions is most likely a 8,200 GVWR half ton, which I call
the fake half ton
'Half ton' spans +6K GVWR to +7K GVWR to +8K GVWR. Insist on using marketing
badging and they are all 'half ton', or 150's, or 1500's.
Or my tongue-n-cheek K3500 Suburban. Tongue-n-cheek because it has the same rear
6,000 GAWR as the 1 ton dually of that year. Ordered it with the F60 option, which
is the 1 ton front torsion spring bars. That 1 ton dually has a front GAWR of
5,250 and my Sub has a 4,250 front GAWR...what does the 1 ton front torsion
spring bars then make my front GAWR? Stays 4,250, as that is what the tags say
This is a forever endless cycle of "what's on first" and "whose on second"... using
marketing badging
There are +20,000 GVWR FIVE lug wheeled trucks....but that +20K GVWR
remains the same no matter what the marketing badge says. Ditto the
ring gear dia...ditto everything used to ID it's class other than the GVWR
So is a 8,200 GVWR a half ton, 3/4 ton and a few decades ago it would have
been the 1 ton...but wait...8,200 GVWR hasn't changed has it?...but the marketing
badging changes with the wind and whim of the fashion statement crowd that the
marketeers target... - dodge_guyExplorer III could be wrong, but i think the 1500 HD had a semi float rear axle (C-clip retained). The 2500 and up got the full float axle!
- BurbManExplorer IIIThen there was the 2500 burb...which had the 8600 GVWR just like the 1500HD or 2500...except if you got it with the 8.1 you also got the 10.5" full floating rear. There were so many iterations of these trucks that finding the right parts can be a challenge...

The 1500HD is just a crew cab version of the 2500 model with the semi-floating rear axle.
It is **NOT** a "half ton" truck. The badging is basically an end-around on some HOA (homeowners association) rules against heavy-duty pickup trucks.
There is nothing different between the 1500, 1500HD, 2500, and 3500 trucks as far as the body is concerned from 2003 on. In 2001-2002, the 3500, and possibly 2500HD pickups have a higher hood.
Actually, in the early 2000s GM did not have a crew cab 1/2 ton to compete with Dodge and Ford, that is why the 1500HD came into existance. Dodge did the same thing a couple of years later because they didn't have a chassis to build a 1/2 ton Mega Cab on.
Around 2005 GM built a new chassis for the 1/2 ton crew cabs but it was a 5 1/2' bed on a shorter w/b than the 1500HD - mkirschNomad IIIn the early 2000's GM made two "3/4 ton" trucks, a 2500 and a 2500HD.

Will this be a daily driver also? Or mainly a tv or w/e, haul the family or Home Depot/ Lowes runs?
Will be a TV and daily driver when we're on the road. That will be for the upcoming 6 months. When we're back on home turf we have a Highlander we use to get around. - Need-A-VacationExplorerCousin has (think he still has it) one, '02. It is a great truck for those that need more payload than a 1500, but not as much as the bigger brother 2500HD has. If they were still available it is what we probably would have.
Will this be a daily driver also? Or mainly a tv or w/e, haul the family or Home Depot/ Lowes runs? - John_JoeyExplorerThanks again, this one only has 100,500 on it, and both units look like and feel like they just rolled off the assembly line.
