I had a brain fart coming home this morning while driving about going back to a SRW 1 ton. So I looked up Ford's '20 towing ratings and given what our coach weighs w/o people in cab, I'd be right at or darn near the limits again for a SRW truck. Not saying it couldn't handle it (tow), but not a whole lot of room left for extras let alone the stability of the DRW we have now. Sadly, I admit the DRW sux in the snow, but back pocket won't allow for a SRW truck at same time w/ the DRW. Unless someone can convince me otherwise, staying w/ the DRW.
I wouldn’t ditch (figuratively) a dually just because of the snow. In fact, our next truck might be a dually and it will run in the winter.
Many things to improve a duallies performance in the slick stuff.
Most predicated on not hauling or towing heavy.
1. Lower rear tire pressure a lot. Like 20-25 psi per tire.
2. Remove inside duals. Again no heavy loads with this one. Still want low ish pressure. Make sure the outsides mount up right. This may not be a valid method depending on the rims and would be my last choice.
3. Put some real weight in back. The typical 500lbs won’t do much. Talking 1000lbs or more and lower tire pressure.
4. Get some aggressive mud tires and sipe them all the way across ( for rear only, full across siping will let the fronts get eaten up quick). Or dedicated snows or at least siped AT tires.
5. Use 4wd more. Heavy front end, skinny tires and 4wd will pull the rear end through a lot.
