My concern with electric vehicles is how they will perform in the cold. We are five miles from Canada in northern NY State. It's not uncommon for us to see -20F in the winter, with days that it doesn't warm up to 0F.
In that kind of weather, you quickly learn when you need a new starting battery! I am assuming the ranges they are estimating is for a vehicle with new batteries? What happens a couple years down the road?
Valid concern. But we live in Canada and do the odd road trip in the winter. 30 percent loss in minus 10 C is probably a good number although we count on minus 35. Still not an issue for us as our road trips are always about 475 kilometers. We take a 20 minute lunch break half way and top up so its never an issue. The car itself is great in the snow. All wheel drive, low centre of gravity, traction control etc.

Technology is a wonderful thing. It always progresses! When the need is acute it progresses faster! - pitchExplorer IIThousands of electricians, masons, landscapers, carpenters, farmers, commuters, use their trucks for thirty forty miles a day. Florists, bakeries ,Diaper services, also operate locally.
I can gauranranfrickentee you that the people who use trucks for long distance hauling are the tiny minority of truck owners.
Other than vacation use, very few trucks ever would run up against the battery limit.
And as for the foolishness of the idiot memes, technology and infrastructure will catch up! - dodge_guyExplorer II

We would use one of the others for long distance.
EVs are coming fast, there is no doubt of that. We might as well accept it, they aren't going away. - gboppExplorer

I'm not opposed to EV's. We (usually) do most of our driving within 80 miles of home.
If the range increases and the price drops maybe I'll consider one.
My concern is the affect it will have on electricity. I'm sure we will start with a mileage tax, which would be fair for EV's.
But, I'm also sure, it will quickly evolve to all vehicles regardless of fuel type in addition to the current gas tax.
Then the politicians will realize they can get more money by taxing everyone on electricity for EV's. That way everyone can pay for the road maintenance.
So, your electric bills will go up even if you don't drive or own a vehicle.

I've often wondered it back in 1900 when electric cars were common, where we would be if the battery technology advanced as quickly as ICE's? - GDS-3950BHExplorerOh Goody, anothre EV thread LOL.....
