Help determine pin weight and 5'ver weight

Reasonable pin weight?
Load truck like your going camping and drive across a set of scales. Subtract scaled weight from GVWR as listed on drivers door post. That is your honest cargo capacity. Read that as maximum pin weight! If in the real world you have 2,000 pounds left over, that means you can handle a 10,000 pound loaded fifth wheel before you exceed your manufacturers GVWR! Of course that does not include 250 pounds for the slider hitch.
Honestly, you will be able to tow way more TT than you will be able to load fifth wheel.

Figure out how much your rear axle weighs empty and subtract that number from your 6100 lb RAWR. I wouldn't exceed the resulting number when you add the pin and hitch weight up.

Yes this is true if your going by GVWR
Some use RAWR (rear axle weight rating) which is a tad higher.

Sorry but I'm not really good with math. Are you guys saying that a brand new F-250 6.7 can only legally tow an 5'ver that weighs about 10K lbs? How do I figure out how much my rear axle weighs?

There's probably some published numbers somewhere on the rear axle weight but a scale is the best way to tell.

And you can safely and legally tow more than a 10k lb fifth wheel. The payload rating is low on your truck because the GVWR on the 250/2500 class of trucks is restricted to 10k lbs for non-capability related reasons. In truth your truck is identical to a SRW F350 minus an overload spring on the rear spring pack and maybe a set of axle blocks. So what your truck can safely tow is higher than what it's official rated for based on your payload sticker, and going over your payload rating is not illegal nor will it subject you to increased liability. In the states I'm familiar with your weight limitation is based on how you register the truck, although in my state there isn't actually a weight limit on RVs.

This has been beat to death on this board so if you want to read up on it you won't have to look very hard.

Max tow would be 13,500# (GCVWR minus GVWR)

BUT your MAX payload (occupants/cargo) is only 2144#

Using 20% of 5vr GVWR for pin weight..........that would be 7200# 5vr.

take a base curb weight of 3000#.....that leaves you 3100#
200# for hitch.....2900#
14,000 GVWR 5th wheel.......20% for pin of 2800#


My 2007 SRW 3500 has same/similar ratings as your 2016 F250

My pin is 2980# with a scaled 13,873# 5th wheel

I am over on trucks GVWR of 10,000#, under RAWR and right at rear tire max load rating

Stay under a 14K GVWR 5th wheel and you should be good to go

My work truck in sig was used to transport new RV trailers. I wanted a F350 dually but they didn't have any in stock so that was my only option. They said it can tow any trailer on the lot and they were about right. I towed all the TT and most 5th wheelers only declining the triple axle toy haulers. My rear would sag somewhat with the bigger 5th wheels but nothing rear air bags or helper springs couldn't handle. To be fair the trailers were empty (new) but being a work vehicle the truck was full of tools and equipment.

So on paper you are severely limited by pin weight if you want to stay within your GVWR and you are carrying people/cargo but otherwise you will see many SRW working hard on the streets.

If you haven't bought one I would consider this strongly but if it is yours you can make it work.

legal load issues with your truck will be the lessor of wheel/tire load numbers......and maybe some type of gross weight registration required in some states when you buy your tag. Some state like mine have no registered weight. Just a fee based on a price number/vehicle age/etc.

As you see some RV folks like to use the vehicles GVWR.....others use the yellow tire placard payload number....some use a number calculated by a GCWR number. Non are a legal load limit.

No one knows your trucks actual axle weight numbers but we can get you close. You need to weigh your trucks front and rear axles.
Many 250/2500 trucks can weigh around 3000 lbs on the rear axle leaving the truck with around 3200 lbs for a payload. The more "junk" we carry in the truck the less payload the truck will have. These are a estimate just to show you how simple the math is once you have real world numbers from the scales.

And of course the F250 has the same drive train/frame/front and rear axles as the F350 SRW so tow rating are the same.
Main differences can be the 350 SRW has higher rated rear suspension/wheels and tire. Now if your F250 has the heavy service package its the same as the 350 SRW.

If you have a 35 series they use the GVWR
If you have a dually there is nothing to heavy :B
