How is warranty work handled on factory TT's

I was looking a various small campers, especially at the fiberglass ones such as Egg Camper. These campers are not sold through dealers --- you get them from the factory.
I tried, without success, to get a response from sales as to how you handle warranty work. Has anyone had any experience in this. I understand that if you have a component that doesn't work, you're supposed to find a factory authorized repair place for that component.
But what if you don't know what the problem is --- your fridge quits. Is is the converter, gas, electrical short? If you go to the fridge place and they say 'not my problem', who pays to look at it and diagnose the issue?
Does it make sense what I'm asking, or am I not understanding how warranties are honored on the factory issued campers?

  • Casita addresses warranty on their web site Casitatraveltrailers.com

Scamp has an 800 number on their web site scamptrailers.com

We have a Casita which we bought used, and I have ordered parts from them on their 800 phone line. The appliances and some other parts are generic and can be bought in any good RV parts store.
  • Which manufacturers couldn't answer the question? I would expect both Scamp and Casita to be able to explain how they handle warranty service. Not guaranteeing that you will like the answer, because for a number of direct sales it is "bring it back to us" or there are a small number of servicing shops, while others are closer to "take it anywhere."
  • This may not be the camper for you if you can't even get a straight answer on how service is handled. Suggest one more call, ask to speak to the sales manager and ask again and also suggest you ask for some information re this to be emailed or faxed to you for future reference. If this doesn't work, I'd keep shopping. Good luck.
  • Look at a different brand of trailer, not a different type.
  • I think you already have your answer to warranty work in the future- Walk away! look for another RV company. When I asked about warranty work from Heartland re: my 5th wheel, I was given the name of number, email address of the the customer service representative at Heartland, he in turn gave me the name and phone numbers of RV service centers in my area that are authorized to complete Heartland warranty work.

Or, it is possible that you were talking to a sales representative who was "too low on the brain food chain" and he didn't know the answer and did not want to go ask his superiors. In either scenero, I would walk away!!!!
  • In your situation I would push to get a recommendation from the manufacturer regarding a repair shop near you that they have some experience working with and a commitment from the manufacturer that they will work with that repair shop to do any warranty work needed.
I agree - do this before you buy.
  • fiberglassRV.com is a forum for small fiberglass trailers many of which are sold factory direct to customer. You may find more info there.
  • A lot of the small RV manufacturers have a small network of RV Repair facilities to take care of their low volume customers. Lazy Daze for example. Seems to work well, I haven't heard that many complaints. Some will let you go to any nearby RV shops, submit an estimate and they'll ok it.

Also,in order to speed things up, some will even send you the parts and directions for an owner good with DIY repairs!
  • I haven't had this exact experience but I purchased a TT from a deal that was three hours from me and about a year later needed some warranty work done. After speaking to the manufacturer they gave me the o.k. to contact a local RV repair facility, have them document the issues and contact the manufacturer. They managed to work out a deal for compensation to do the warranty work with me not having to pay anything out of pocket.
