Larger gas tank

Best I can tell, you would have to pump from it to your stock truck tank.


Easy, just get an electric fuel pump from NAPA or your favorite place. I had to install a normally closed electric fuel valve between the pump and stock vehicle tank to prevent siphoning when the electric one was turned off. So flip the switch and the valve opens and the pump turns on.

ATI also makes diamond plate aluminum tanks that are DOT certified for gas. They are roughly twice what the same size diesel only tank from Tractor Supply would cost. Best I can tell, you would have to pump from it to your stock truck tank.

Awesome idea if you are a mechanic, fabricator, auto body man and electrician.
And a cool idea for F series trucks.
But you could stop at a lot of gas stations for the time and $ involved with this swap.

Your cheapest option would be to install an Excursion 44 gallon tank where your spare tire lives now. Get a tank from a gasser Excursion being parted out, fab up the 4 mounting points to your rear frame and make the needed plumbing mods for the fill neck and fuel lines.

You can get Dot cert gas transfer tanks. Look at JME or RDS tanks.
Not sure about larger belly tanks for gas.
I'd be comfortable plumbing in a gravity fill with a valve to the filler hose. Not sure if it's legal though.
Based on your last 2 threads about your truck, you're now asking about spending as much as the truck is worth potentially in upgrades to a 14 year old pickup that has a low resale.
If you're on that strict of a budget, save your $ and run what you have. It's a pretty reliable setup if it's been well maintained.
Otherwise pool up the cash you're thinking about dropping on all these mods, sell the 5.4 and get something more suited to your needs.
You'll never get 2cents out of the upgrades you're planning when you sell it.

Looks like Aero Tanks has what I am looking for. Its also metal, not plastic tank. Aero Tanks I will give them a call tomorrow to confirm it.

I have also sen dropping the tank. Pull the filler neck and cut a little off of it. It will effectively give you a larger tank.

How much bigger will vary with how much you cut off. Make sure to leave yourself some leeway for expansion etc.

I've had several inbed and replacement diesel tanks from Transferflow. They have gas too.

If "cheap" is among your requirements, don't even bother looking ' cause they ain't.

If I put a diamond plate aluminum aux tank in my PU bed and plumb it as follows:

No drain plug.

Tank is baffeled.

Use an electric pump to pull from a dip tube in the top of the tank.
Pump the fuel into a T in the main tank filler neck.

Install a Veton fuel shut off valve between the electric pump and the main. This valve will be closed automatically when not transferring.

The system has a roll over shut off valve in it.

Now will someone find a statute or DOT whatever that says that is not an approved or OK way of having a gas transfer/aux tank in the bed of a pick up?
