- spadoctorExplorer IIIf you are planning to travel at night to start time your trip to be at the junction of 87 (NYS Thruway and 84 at 6 pm or later. Then the best route is 87 south to 287 into NJ to the NJ Turnpike then 95 all the way. This is the way we go all the time and the timing allows passing DC without traffic. I live about 45 miles north of the starting point on east side of the Hudson river and I can be in Myrtle Beach in 13 hours towing
- Capeman1Explorerok thanks for everyone help...leaving tomorow
- shotputguyExploreruse 295 eastbound around Jax and as suggested 301 around Bal/Wash
- billygExplorerHi, skip I77 charlotte area from 630-930am and 330-700pm rush hour not fun I drive it everyday. The traffic build up is mostly north of lake norman to the SC state line. Saturday & Sunday smooth sailing. Bill

Heading down next week. Any road updates
Thanks
Hi Capeman,
Heres how i go south, Either in the Truck with camper and trailer or on the motorcycle. I come down from New Hampshire.
Anyways, here goes. I take the Mass pike to A) Rt 84 all the way to Penn, or B)Mass Pike to 87 in NY down to 84. Either way they can be tough. 84 to Penn and as soon as you cross the state line get off and take 209 through the Water Gap. Go all the way to Rt 80 N for about 10 miles and then take 33 to 22 to 78 to 81 south. This avoids the big mountains on 81.
In Virginia 17 is a nice option to go from Winchester to Fredricksburg to pick up 95. Further south in Virginia is 68, where the Skyline and BlueRidge meet. This can take you down to Richmond. Just go around Richmond to 95 as its a busy city.
So, mass pike to 84 to 209 to 80 to 33 to 22 to 78 to 81.
77 is not bad but takes you through Charlotte NC which can be busy too. I dont think there is any one way that is perfect. All our roads suck and traffic is everywhere.
Good luck and have a great time. - cmarqExplorerI stay away from 95 to FL even by car. Too many cities tolls traffic. 81 is hilly and can have weather issues but plenty of places to stop a day or 2. I can travel at a slower pace and enjoy it. Once you get in south VA the chances of snow decrease.
- mooring_productExplorerI do 95-91 when I go up to your area. I have never tried any other route. Its going to be in the 80's here in South Florida this weekend.
- markandkimExplorer IIYour route is the best way to go. It's the route we always take. Never I95.
- shellbackcva59ExplorerI-81 can get ugly in the winter, lots of truck traffic too. If you don't mind losing about an hour, consider jumping off I-95 and onto Rt 301 around Wilmington, DE. Follow it through MD and VA. It ties back onto I-95 10 or 20 miles north of Richmond. It will eliminate the Baltimore/Washington traffic. Not the fastest route with traffic lights and all, but you only have to get held up once on I-95 around DC, to find another way. It's been my choice of route with my truck camper and pulling a boat.
