- DSteiner51ExplorerChildren, children, you folks argue too much. When it comes to noise mine is quieter then anything you own especially since I got the rubber coating on the steel wheels. Just a nice romantic, rhythmic clip clop, clip clop, clip clop, clip clop.

If you want the Ford, buy the Ford. But don't base it off the noise, especially when you haven't driven the new trucks.
Andre and Kent seemed to notice the noise difference in the brand new trucks. 60db is normal conversation level. 75db is shop vac level.
I am not arguing that in this test the Ford was quieter. It was. But it isn't fair to compare the noise level of your 2003 5.9 vs a 2016 6.7. It isn't that you are comparing apples and oranges. You are comparing apples and orangoutangs.
The interior noise in a RAM is no where near the level of a shop vac. Unless you are running a shop vac in the back seat. - Cummins12V98Explorer III

GIVE ME A BREAK!!!
If you are talking about my 98 12V I would agree. - Cummins12V98Explorer III

The Ford is the quietest? I'll take it. The Cummins hum can get pretty old after a long day driving.
And according to you sig line you have never owned a 4th gen RAM!
On the road towing with the lower RPM RAM may be quieter than the higher RPM Ford. Chris
There are a few reasons for not continuing with Ram. 71db to 68db is quite a bit quieter in the new ones. The Ram has a collection of vibration dampeners bolted under it attempting to quiet it down. Apparently, it hasn't. My '03 common rail Cummins was as quiet as a new on with regard to diesel clatter. It's the Cummins hum that turns into Cummins drone after a long day on the road. I believe it was at 2100rpm under load if I remember correctly.

I tow 23k with my 15 RAM with 4.10's turning 1,750 RPM's @ 60. My combined weight is 33k. I get 9mpg hand calculated towing at 60 mph. This is West coast where I can be as low as 7 or high as 10.5.
I was wondering if you would chime in as I know you pull pretty heavy.
Not sure what the specifics, rpm and such were but when I towed my 16.5K toy hauler, my Ram was getting around 11mpg towing. To me 6.6 seems a little low but then I don't pull any faster than 65mph for an extended period of time.
Is that gas station to gas station hand calculated? Or rolling on the freeway and reset the DIC? I've towed between 8k and 10k bumper pulls with several diesels and only get above 10 mpg under 60 mph. Most of these were tuned and no regens. I track everything in an app so everything is hand calculated every fill up.
I have recorded every singly tank since new. I fill to the top each time and record mileage hand calc. No I do not reset after rolling as it WILL change the mileage!
I am VERY happy with 9 at 33K combined. This is with 4.10's.
FWIW hand calc 11 HO Dually towing same roads 9.5mpg at 29K combined with 3.42's. - blofgrenExplorer

It would be silly to run a new Ram CTD at 2100 rpms all day. My 12 runs around 1700-1800 at 65 mph or so. Even when I'm running in the mtns and lock out 6th it's never over 2000 rpms and usually around 1800-1900. I would suggest that just for giggles you trot on down to the nearest Ram dealer and test drive one.
My '98 12v Cummins ran 2500rpm all day towing or not. Had no choice with the 4.10/5spd. It was actually quieter than the clatterless '03 common rail Cummins at 2100rpm. The 2001.5 3.55/6spd was a pleasure to drive at 1750rpm. Just the same, the Ford is quieter in my experiences as well as the recent FLTruck test.
As I said before you're comparing apples to oranges. My current truck is much quieter than my 1996 F-250 7.3L too........that's the type of comparison you're making from a 2001 Cummins to a current generation one. And I doubt that 2 decibels is really all that noticeable to most people. - Cummins12V98Explorer III

This is my 11 HO pulling at 75 into 40mph head winds West of Oklahoma. Combined 29K.
I am showing 6.3 average MPG over 46 miles. I agree the 6.6 should be a bit higher.

Look at the TFL test. That are VERY similar when climbing with the engines working.
You need to tow with a newer RAM! - HannibalExplorerThey all can have drive line launch shudder. The drive line vibe was at 45~mph and again at 65~mph give or take a few. The local dealership did all they could with my '03. They even sent me to a drive line shop in Clearwater to have a new balanced drive shaft installed. Chrysler corporate finally said there's nothing they could do. So I traded it for the '05 Hemi powered 2500HD Ram. The Hemi was a fantastic engine with plenty of power to tow our 10,400 lb 5th wheel around the southeast. I forget how many miles were on it when the drive line vibe crept in. So, it's not the Cummins engine as some have said as far as the dreaded drive line vibe goes or 4X4's only. I still think it was the pinion in the AAM rear end but it's no longer my concern. The F250 has no vibes and no drone. Less power with 5.4L but we still set cruise on 65mph and let it eat.
- Me_AgainExplorer III"Strange noises from the internet!" I do not even know mine is a diesel noise wise until towing heavy and hard on a mountain pass. Towing at 24K combined I lock out 6th gear and tow at a quiet 1750 RPM in 5th at around 60 MPH.
Both GM and RAM have had cases of drive line launch shutter with heavy loads. I have not had that with my short bed. Not sure if FORD's have had that issue.
My friends early Ext Cab Duramax had the issue and I found the TSB for him to get it converted to a single piece aluminum drive line, which cured it. Two piece drive lines are at the core of a lot of issues, which change with load and u-joint angle.
