opinions please....on a old Lance

Me and my wife are considering buying a Lance Squire 8000 (10 foot, 9 inches). Today we sold our 1999 Fleetwood Angler. We have been truck camping for 2 1/2 years. The Lance that we are considering is old, a 1996. It is at a local used car agency that took it in on trade with a 2003 Ford F-350 Super Duty (SRW). The car lot sold the truck but the new owner did not want the camper. The asking price is $2995. I did walk through the camper the other day and saw no signs of leakage but I do know that doesn't mean a thing.

My questions are as follows:

Is $3000 a fair price for a 20 year old unit?

Are these tie down rings correct for this model? I happened to see a Lance Model 1030 down at the Jersey Shore today and the tie downs looked more like the ones on my old Fleetwood.

Thanks for any info you might have.

  • If it is what you are looking for then it is probably worth it.

Remember, a dealer always jacks up the asking price so he can reduce the price to make the buyer feel better about the price.

Offer $2K and then negotiate. You might feel a lot better about the buy.

Also, it's an old camper, so even if in good shape it will probably need maintenance. It will be a fun project until you get it the way you want it.
  • I had a Lance Lite at one time. They're nice, but are also known for having the jacks pull on and damage the camper body.

Be sure to check that the tie-downs aren't working loose and that the place where the jacks are attached to the camper haven't put strain on the interior wood and compromised the integrity. Might be a good idea to google that so you know more about it. Other than that, I really liked my unit. It was a 2005, 8 feet, and I paid 5k for it back about 8 years ago, if that helps,.
  • WOW. Nice looking, clean unit.
The camper come to the age where original cost and age lost significance.
You have to inspect it well, check for potential upgrades (old converters suck big time) and make your mind what it is worth for you.
Some 40 years old Airstream trailers sell for the same price they cost new 40 years ago.. some even above.
  • If I recall they were selling for about $14,000 new. Basically trouble free at the time.
