outfitter apex 9.5

looking at buying an 2003 Outfitter Apex 9.5. have not yet seen it. but appears to be ok and fits my budget and needs.
any comments, especially what to look out for ?
  • That's the model and year my bro has and he loves it. There was some 'period of adjustment' with it early on. (electrical system had to be rewired. Plumbing was hooked up wrong.) I have spent some time in his and find it much more roomy than my tiny Lance Lite. He must run the heater if it gets below 60 deg. F. He runs the exhaust fan when lowering the top which sucks in the canvas (or whatever that material is). The bottom frame screws were all loose and many pulled out after the racking of the frame going on a White Truck Expedition with the Four Wheeler Magazine team. Since he had the largest white truck, they made him go first through the thickets and between the trees to open up the hole for the rest. Kinda tough on the old OUTFITTER! If you buy a used one, all the kinks should be ironed out already.
Yes, condition is all. How and where it was stored is a big factor.

  • We have a 2007 model that we bought used from Outfitter in 2009, it had very little use on it. We have put a lot of miles on it well in the excess of 40,000 miles.

If the outfitter are looking at has the electric waste valves, you may want to make sure they open and keep them open and just use the outside valve. Our black water waste valve has failed and its necessary to do a repair, this is not easy or inexpensive.

The water tank drain valve needed replacement. I replaced the original batteries this past spring.

We do regular maintenance, all RV's need it.

Both my wife and I are very happy with our choice. Its a good solid, quiet, comfortable and dependable rig. Knowing what we know today, yes we would buy another one.

    Good Luck.
  • I also have a 2004 Outfitter Apex 8. I have owned it for about 2 years now and have nothing but good things to say. Outfitter has responded to, and answered, several questions I have had, even though I did not buy it from them.

It's a 10 year old camper, so it is not without some cosmetic issues. I had to replace the water pump and the door lock. Other than that, no problems at all.
  • I own a 2004 Apex 8. Here's the issues I've had since 2004:

-front vent cover came open twice and broke while driving.
-some wear on the Weblon in spots where the shock cord attachment rivets are not smooth.
-city water fitting/one-way valve failed after just 10 years. :)
    -one jack motor failed.
-grey water electric valve switch is intermittent...but works.
-photo paper on sidewall above the counter is coming off at the caulking. Seems as if the caulking caused the glue to dissolve.
-That's all I can think of.

Note: I caused one tiedown attach point to fail when I had a flat rear tire and used the camper jacks to take the weight off the rear of the truck so I could change the tire. I had no other choice at the time. The failure was easily fixed with a piece of angle aluminum and has not been an issue in 8 years and many miles on rough roads.

What I don't have after 10 years of ownership and use:

    -leaks
    -delamination of Filon
-structural problems of any kind (except the minor one I caused)
-water pump, furnace, HW heater, roof lift, etc failure
-lack of support of Outfitter after the sale.
-regret of buying my Apex 8.
  • Another Outfitter owner here - but mine is a 2011. I think you need to look at all the things you would look at in any 11 year old camper. At that age, the way it was stored, used and maintained is more important than the original build quality.

Open up everything and anything and look inside and behind. Everything should be nice and dry; especially the lower portions. And, of course, everything should work as expected. Have the seller show and demonstrate everything; that way you will see how well they know the camper and how they treat it.

Check for delaminations in the walls. There should be no bubbles inside or out. If there are, clarify what they are and if they will grow bigger. They can be just poor manufcturing; but they can also indicate a leak.

There were a number of changes throughout the years. At some time after 2010, they went from a multipiece TPO roof to a one-piece fiberglass unit. On my 2011, the outside walls are some sort of fiberglass, not wood backed. I am not sure if they were the same material throughout the production years.

Check the Weblon softwall for wear from the inside. Mine tends to get caught in the roof lift mechanism and shows some use in one place.

Personally, I love my Outfitter for its ingenious design and ruggedness. You will be surprised how much storage space there is inside. The build quality and fit & finish were not so great on my sample. But I am stil very happy with it as it does exactly what I expect from a camper.
