Where, starting in Florida, would be the best place to pick up Route 66? My friend and are thinking we might be able to use this as our main route out west, diverting of course, to other states and points of interest on the way. Can you tell I have no idea what I'm talking about? If this makes sense, please help me if you will. I have no earthly idea WHERE this is, not to mention how conceivable it would be to get BACK to it after diverting to Yellowstone, Grand Tetons and so on and so forth.Also, if I were to rely upon one or two road books for routes and POI's would you count more on your GPS or an Atlas? )I thank you a plenty now.Newbienac (Beth)

The old Route 66 ran from Chicago to LA, so based upon where you're located I'd pick it up in Chicago take it west then go north up to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons.

Goto to GOOGLE SEARCH and get the whole story of Route 66. It runs from Chicago to Los Angeles and generally follows I40.About the only places left that are still labeled as Route 66 is in AZ and CA...I have my picture of me standing next to a real Route 66 road sign around here somewhere... Route 66 started in Chicago and ended up at the Santa Monica Pier.Il, Mo, Ok, Tx, NM, Az and Ca.Coming from Fl, you'd probably pick it up in Tx. I'd use a map rather than a GPS.

Buy some of the Route 66 books that are available online. They describe where, when and how to get to the best areas.You can still follow some of the old highway in Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona & California. A very scenic route is from Kingman Arizona west through the mountains down to the Colorado River. Good Rt 66 books will give locations of long gone sites as well as some still in business. Lots of good recommendations for places to eat also.Hope some of this helps. Being Florida puts you no where near the highway though.

Get a book (or two) on Route 66, read up on it, and decide just how much and what parts of it you want to try to see. As noted much of it no longer exist. And what does exist for the most part exist in short stretches scattered across the states noted above.But Yellowstone and Tetons are a LONG way from 66. You would probably do best by getting one out of the way first and then finish up with the other rather than trying to detour off 66 and then try to return to it.You could drift north and pick up 66 in Missouri, follow it westward as far as you want, then start a return trip to the north to get Yellowstone, Tetons, and other destinations in that part of the US as you made your way back home. Hopefully you are planning on an extended length trip to see all that.

Do you mean this place in Seligman,Az.

Along some of the old Route 66 there's only a marker where it use to be, one such place is inside Arizona's Petrified Forest (yes I've Photo's if you want to see them)

I have done Route 66 twice by Motorcycle from Mass. Will be going again this September 2014 again by motorcycle , this time my wife will also be on her MC FOR the trip.

When we finally buy our RV, we will do it again.

I was so taken by the mother road that I have a RT 66 Tattoo from my first trip.

Yes it does go thru Kansas and you should stop there to see the original Towmator from cars and the old , renovated brothel across the street.

Oh yeah watch your speed thru Kansas as the signs going into Galena go from 50 to 25 in 5 MPH increments with changes every 200 yards or so.

Thats what I remember of Route 66. As a kid taking 66 from Ca. on our way to Michigan in the 50's. Stopping frequently at all the curio shops, roadside desert 'mueseums', little 2 pump gas stations. Whole different form of travel. Coarse took us a week to get to the Mississippi.

No problem. Isn't it great to learn something new.

When I was a kid we traveled a lot. We would pick up Route 66 in OK when heading west. I remember the roadside parks with picnic tables and trash barrels. The small towns had diners and motor inns.

My wife and I both grew up on route 66 (1 mile from each other) and after we married we always said we would follow the mother road. 4 yrs ago we finally fulfilled that item on our bucket list. Took us a month and a half but worth every minute. Great scenery, adventures, people, restaurants and memorabilia! If one has the opportunity to do so, do it, you won't regret it.
