- jevanbExplorerI have been putting rotella T6 syn (diesel ) in my engine since 6k miles. I get it for $19.00 a gallon at any Meijers, some time wally world will have it for the same price, and at 10 qts it is not a expensive task as most people think. I also change it at 6k miles. With 99k miles and heavy towing, it gets a sample sent off and everything is perfect

I run synthetics for peace of mind.
Really cold weather? Synthetic is better in the cold.
Driving 500 miles in the middle of summer? Synthetics handle heat better.
Longer vacation than planned? Synthetics handle longer change intervals better.
As previously said, conventional oils, when changed at the proper intervals, work just fine. Synthetics are just better. I'm willing to pay extra for that.
BTW, I use Royal Purple. Some Walmarts carry it - $8.49 a quart. As hard as I work my truck, I'm willing to pay the extra cost.
Very Well Said I fully agree. I use R-P also :B :B
X2 except fo the Royal Purple. - wmosesExplorer

Many OEM's are using synthetic for the factory fill these days.
What the heck do they know? ;)
They should have consulted "Bob The Oil Guy". Must be a conspiracy somewhere .... :h - wmosesExplorer

Mobil1 5quart jug at Wally World is usually about 25 or less. I don't think that's a significant price difference over conventional oil.
Agreed. And that is why I get my Mobil 1 at Wally World. Even better there than at Sams Club. - Turtle_n_PeepsExplorerLong story short; no you won't see any benefits.
To give you an analogy about synthetic oil:
I can measure my waist with a micrometer or a tape measure. The tape measure does just fine for me even thought I can get a more accurate measurement with the micrometer.
We don't even use synthetic oils in most of our race motors and they live just fine lap after lap at 8 to 9K. - CKNSLSExplorer

Conventional oil was used by those in Alaska for years before synthetics came along. Conventional oil performs fine in the summer in extreme heat. YOUR MOTOR WILL NOT LAST LONGER USING CONVENTIONAL OIL VS. SYNTHETICS. 99.5% of synthetic users never use their oil to it's maximum OCI.
Spend some reading time over at bobistheoilguy.com. - Passin_ThruExplorerIMHO, you just pay more for syn and don't get anything back. After 4.3 million miles of driving I use Rotella T and change when Blackstone says I need to. I have had great success.

How easy or hard is Amsoil to get?
Not very, either internet order or look for a local distributor.CKNSLS wrote:

Synthetics handle high heat better than conventional oils, and towing generates more heat than normal driving.
Mobil 1 is a Group 3 synthetic, or it was last I checked, which is barely considered a synthetic. I would look at a good group 4, like Amsoil, and run one year round and based on the year and mileage you would probably be able to do once a year oil changes, something not advised with dino oil.
Conventional oils are fine for towing.
