Returning from our trip, We decided to call it the night before continuing out journey back home. When we pulled in the RV park I notice that one of my tires was losing air, so I told the DW, well let me change this tire now because I am not going to feel like doing this in the AM. When I took the tire off it looked like some one ripped the skin off in one section. ( like you peel an orange )I said to the wife, looks like we need a new tire. Now Lets back track a bit I recall the DW asking me ,don't you think you are going a little to fast while towing? I just looked at her and said. Nah it's ok, well call me every name in the book because I deserve it. I was going a little to fast ( 70-80 ) at some times. Now one gentlemen at the RV park was watching me changing the tire and he told me that this tires are meant to go only up to 65MPH or less. Is he right?:o Which brand is the best tire out there please advise to this person who should of listen to his wife. :o

What brand are the tires? most ST tires are rated for a max speed of 65. that's probably what did your tire in. also 70-80 is a bit fast. My comfortable speed is 67, but my ST "E" rated tires are good for 73 if I remember correctly. what size are your tires. If they are 15" I would step up to Carlisle`s new HD "E" rated tire. they are rated at 86 mph IIRC.

I'd suggest to buy Carlisles in Load range D. Maxxis is another good choice but they will probably have to be ordered by your tire shop. If you want the best tires possible, buy bigger rims and buy LT truck tires. AFAIK, all tires have a speed rating stamp on the sidewall. Most ST trailer tires are speed rated for 65 mph. Just recently, certain mfgs are producing ST tires with a higher speed rating. IMO, 75 mph with the combination you have is too fast. In the event of an emergency driving situation, you're at the edge of controllability.

The best brand tires are anything NOT made in China and stamped ST. Plenty of threads on the subject.

The Kumho 857 is a LT tire for commercial light truck, transporter, van and trailers. Only available in 14", it has an 8ply strength (actually twin steel belted with 2ply poly cords) D load range with Q(99mph)speed rating. In 205/R14 it has a max load of 2271 @ 65psi. I just had these mounted on 14" aluminum rims rated to 65psi on my 7800# GVWR Keystone Bullet. Got em at Belle Tire. Special order. I put over 5000 miles on them from Michigan to RockyMountNP, ArchesNP, CanyonlandsNP, BryceNP, and ZionNP this past July. They performed better than the ST's I replaced. Now I'm not afraid to hit 70 or 75 when I pass a slower vehicle. But my truck performs the best at 63mph for good power and mileage and that's where I like to drive it.

I agree Walaby I was very irresponsible putting those around me in danger and my wife, by driving in such of high speed, and for that I apologize. I also want to thank everyone here for their input on this subject. Have a wonderful afternoon. And I will be buying 4 new tires..

Yes, 10 years ago. Since then Carlisle has come a long way! I'm on my 2nd set and they have performed excellent!

I would step up to a load range "D" and then slow down to no more than 70! There is no reason to run at 75-80 at all! I'm sure the trailer was built to the tires load rating, which means the tire will be maxed out when the trailer is fully loaded! Even my current 11k lb GVWR trailer came with China bomb "D" rated tires!!!!!! When the first one failed after 500 miles I stepped up to the Carlise "E" rated tire and have been very happy. BTW, my trailer has a loaded ready to travel weight of 9200 lbs.

80MPH is unsafe in my opinion, regardless of tire. Do yourself, your wife, and those on the road around you and SLOW DOWN. Your stopping distance in case of emergency is significantly increased towing when towing. The conditions of our freeways are generally fair to horrible, and that adds to the unsafe condition you are creating.

Kenny, regardless of tire the max speed rating will be stamped on the side wall. Even if I had tires rated at 70-80 I would't tow my rig that fast. It's to hard on everythig else on or in the rig due to the conditions of most of our highways.

Yep, they probably really are rated for 65mph, and also probably are rated for the GVWR of the trailer minus tongue weight (in other words - for many trailers, but not all - it also wouldn't have been hard to overload them).

IMO, if you run 5 mph (or more) below their speed rating and 15 percent (or more) below their weight rating, just about any brand will do. Getting under the ratings can mean needing to upgrade to a larger diameter and load range.

I bought Carlisle and couldn't be happier. They're N rated too, not that I'd drive that fast towing a trailer.
