Torklift Super Truss

Anyone see a problem with shortening my 48" extension to 36". Top shank is 2-1/2" solid steel milled down to 2" on the hitch end, 5-3/4" back. Bottom compression tube (hollow) is 2", both with a hitch pin hole 2-1/2" from end. This worked well on old TC when I bought it, but present one has less overhang and prevents lower of two folding steps from laying flat. I can't see it affecting the integrity of the extension at all, I'm just cutting and shortening steel, and taking a few links off the stabling chain. Close to 575.00 for another 12" shorter, doesn't seem worth it. What say you ? Thanks K.Mac
  • Several years ago, I shortened mine from 48" to 42". Never had a problem. If I remember correctly, we cut the rear ends and off, cut the welds on the outer support ring and removed it so it could be rewelded at the end of the tube after it was shortened. This way no need to worry about alignment of the pin holes.

As noted above, check the locations of the bands and replace in relative locations. Measure carefully.

  • Certainly would be less work finding someone to swap with, or selling outright recouping some cost to replace. Shortening though wouldn't affect its integrity, actually increase its capacity shortening 12", decrease its leverage.

I shortened ours. It's an older Super Truss & top tube isn't solid bar. The solid 2" male end is about 12" long, inserted/welded into top 2 1/2" tube. So chose to shorten from the hollow ball mount ends. Can be cut from insert end but considerably more work. Especially as Brad mentioned ensuring ease of inserting into hitch. Aligning one set of pin holes doable, 2 parallel sets of holes I saw as impossible with tooling I have.

After removing the reinforcing ring and chain plate I cut off from the ball mount end and comp tube. Drilled new pin hole & re-welded chain plate and reinforcing ring.

If you go this route, I would do a lot of measuring before cutting to make sure the shortened pieces will still be perfectly parallel and align perfectly with the receivers. Even being off 1/16" or 1/8" could cause some real issues since everything is very ridged with no give.

    Good Luck,

  • I know I'm not directly answering your question, but I'd just post it somewhere for sale/trade. I'm sure someone out there has bought a bigger TC and needs your longer SuperTruss and would LOVE to do a straight across swap.
