Towing with a Cadallic Escalade

Anyone tow with the Escalade ESV with the 6.2 liter 3.42 axel. Have
an opportunity to buy a 2013 at a very good price part of an estate.
GM does not offer the factory brake controller so I'm wondering if
they are hinting its not a tow vehicle. This one is the AWD model.
Have never seen one being used to pull an RV. My TT weighs 6,200 dry. Thanks!!!
  • Check the glove box label of all options it had when it was built & left the factory with. IIRC...Z82 is the tow option, but not for sure...someone might have better memory...

Here is one of the master GM RPO code sites have on file : Halderman, GM RPO code list

If not, then make sure to install the necessary aux stuff, but that might now offset the "good price"

Another is to look for a Tow/Haul button. It comes with the tow package and again IIRC...

Also, these GM AWD full sized Lux SUV's has a fluid coupled third member...meaning not as stout as a traditional non-fluid coupled third member (a third diff and is in the "ONE" speed transfer case on AWD...better/stronger are the traditional ones with a "TWO" speed transfer case). You will find it referenced as a "viscous" component of the transfer case

A lot depends on where/how/etc you drive and the maintenance the previous owner(s) (both schedule and materials/labor) used.

As I understand it the 6.2 is an all aluminum from the Corvette. Does that make it bad for towing? Not sure. Sure would not be my first choice as a tow platform.

In a half ton platform it should be. It's got the most power and highest tow ratings (or close it) in its class. It's not a vette motor. Those are like 600+ hp now.

I think that's a little too much trailer for that vehicle. The it no doubt has the power to pull it, but newer SUVs like that don't have a strong frame to support the weight so I'm betting the payload capacity isn't up to that kind of weight.

Say what? The frame is the last thing that would be an issue unless somethings changed with the big GM and Ford SUVs being truck based chassis.

To the OP, yes it should be a great tow vehicle. And if it's not, but it's a great deal, buy it, try it, if you don't like it, sell it for a profit and buy something else with more $ in your pocket.
  • Not saying it is wise but we had a GMC Yukon pull in across from us this weekend pulling a Cherokee 39KR park model. It definitely looked like a load for it.

  • Forget about dry weight on the trailer, unless you're going to leave it empty for towing. It probably weighed more than 6200 lbs before it left the dealers lot.

Average camping load (dishes, pots and pans, bedding, camp chairs, BBQ, groceries, water, etc) is 800 to 1000 lbs. Loaded for camping you'll be towing close to 7200 lbs. That will require more than 1000 lbs of available payload.

Look at the drivers door sticker on the Escalade, it will have a number for max occupant / cargo weight. From that number, subtract the weight of all the people, pets, and cargo that you plan to carry in the tow vehicle. Whatever is left over, is payload available for trailer weight.

The Escalade may be a good tow vehicle, however, the weight of that trailer may be pushing it's limits.

I found a site that said the max tow capacity for that Escalade was 7600 lbs. Keyword here is "max". As you load weight (people, pets, cargo) into the tow vehicle, it's max tow capacity and available payload are dropping, pound for pound.
  • Not "hinting" at all. See Cadillac specs for that year and model...it can tow. Did you look prior to posting?
  • Yeah, well the 5.3l in a Yukon XL is also and it makes a very good towing machine.
