towing with a new 3.7 f150

i just bought a new 2013 super cab f150 3.7 v-6 to pull my 21fbrs flagstaff. does anyone have any experience with this motor? the maximum tow capacity is 6700 lb and my trailer weighs 3700 dry. i pulled the trailer home to missouri from iowa 300 miles with my 4 liter ranger super cab with no problem. used speed control and no overdrive most of the way. just wanted a truck with a bigger foot print on the road. the 3.7 has alot more power than the 4.0 in my ranger. i haven't towed with the new one yet. it has the trailer tow package and 3.73 traction lock rearend. just wondering what to expect. 300 miles is about as far as we will be going from home.

There are so few F150's with the 3.7 sold, and even fewer are being used as a towing platform. About half of the F150's get the 3.5 EcoBoost, many with the 5.0, and a smidgeon with the 6.2. The 3.7 is supposed to be a good engine, but its usually in the trucks that need to meet a certain price-point.

Let us know how it tows for you.

Oh, and that 7:52 Edmund video.... generally worthless. 7 minutes of fluff, 50 seconds of opinions, and about 2 seconds worth of real facts. What is the value of a comparison of base V-6 engines that very few use as a tow platform in either the Ford or Fiat-Ram?

My guess is that those full size V6 trucks get better hwy mileage than the V6 small trucks. It would be nice to have a full size truck that gets the same mpg as a V6 Tacoma or Frontier. I know my 06 V6 Frontier barely broke the 22 mpg range. It had a 6500lb tow rating and was a dog towing 4050lbs. I would imagine that the F150 or Ram 1500 and even the new GM V6 1500 would out tow the Tacoma and Frontier. Not everyone needs a truck to tow 11,000lbs with. They would make great commuter trucks that are perfectly capable of towing 4-5000lbs.
  • Here is a thread that I started earlier this year on this topic. I'm in a holding pattern on a newer vehicle.. right now our Kia Sorento is doing just fine.. but when it comes time for me to buy a new truck (hopefully sooner than later!!) one of these V6 rigs will be on the radar for sure!!

    Thanks!

I really like the line in there about Ford selling 640,000 plus another 100,000 in Canada and the guy comparing that to McDonalds. You know how some say McDonalds sells the most burgers but that doesn't mean they're the best.

I know what you mean. My favourite local burger is phenomenal. It's at a drive inn, in the country about 50 miles from where we live. We think nothing of driving out there once a month to enjoy this fine food fare.

They're only open from April till October....closed for the winter. They've been selling burgers and wonderful milkshakes since 1960.

I doubt if they make more than about 10-15,000 burgers a year.

They're like the Rolls-Royce of burgers.

Made like Rolls-Royce too.... in small numbers, bespoke creation, excellent ingredients/components and absolutely superb final product.

Now that doesn't sound like McDonalds or just about any of the large automotive manufacturers.

But, when you consider the value you get for a GM, Ford, Dodge product....they're hard to beat. They might not be products of the carriage trade...but generally they crank out excellent vehicles.

I have to say for a fast, cheap, relatively nutritious meal on the go...a McDonald's double burger or A+W Papa burger...ain't bad at all either.

  • Does the truck have select shift where you can limit the top gear? If so, then limit to 4th gear, let it spin and enjoy.
  • As long as you don't exceed any of the multiple ratings on the truck you can safely tow it. It may need to run high RPM's to do it but that is really about your comfort level with the truck.
  • Our company has been buying those. It is actually quite a bit more powerful than the even the old 4.6L V8. You should be fine. It may cruise at a higher RPM (with the trailer) than your old motor if you had the pushrod 4.0. But its so smooth at higher RPMs you wouldn't know if you weren't watching the tach.

note - You can tap the shift arrows up and down to limit your top gear. If you put it in "M" it will no longer downshift automatically, except when it hits minimum operating RPMs.
