Truck Camper Proper Fit in Truck Bed?

I own a 2016 Ford F-250 super duty short bed. I purchased a 2016 Northstar 8.5 Arrow U in April. When loaded onto the truck there remains about a 3 to 3.5 inch gap between the front of the camper and the bulkhead of the truck bed. I'm not comfortable with that. I have the Torklift tie down system and use fast Guns.I have yet to put the camper on the road due to illness. Should I be concerned about shifting? The camper sits on a rubber bed mat.

  • Thanks for the replies and info. The reason for the fit issue is the bed length. If the camper shifts forward an inch or more it will break the tail lamps on the truck for sure and damage the camper. I will build a block system. Thanks again.
  • It will shift forward without blocking. Even with 3/4" horse stall mats on my flatbed, the TC would slowly creep forward without blocks. Interestingly, I have never had side creep issues like some owners (even when traveling on washboard roads).

I assume that the truck tail lights do not clear the wings of your TC or there is something hanging bellow that does not allow for farther placement forward. My Ford short bed was fine, but my Ram flatbed is too long to clear the generator exhaust, bumper supports and drains under the TC beyond 7.5'.
  • I never get my camper loaded with the front rubber stops tight against the bulkhead. Always 1/8 or 1/4 gap. By about mile 50 it has shifted forward so they are tight. Yes it will move. I block would block it with the right thickness of wood. That does two things: gets it to the right place, and spreads the load from the little bumpers across the somewhat flimsy sheet metal of the bulkhead.
  • I wouldn't believe anyone that says it won't shift forward on you without blocking. Makes no sense. Anyway, you didn't say why it sits back that far. Presuming camper won't go any farther forward before it hits something in back?
In that case, yes just put the appropriate sized solid blocking in the bed across the front for the camper to rest against.
I think most people do that. My camper fits fine but the little rubber bumpers up front just squish after a while on the road and the camper ends up slap against the front of the bed.
  • i leave between 2 and 3 inches between my camper and box and i travel off road 90 percent of my trips and i've yet to have my northstar shift even an inch.
  • My Ford truck bed is 6 foot 7 and a half inches. What I use is a 2x4 with carpet on it and a 1x4 screwed together. Then when we take the camper off the truck at campgrounds the 2x4 is used under the TC with aluminum jack stands to help stabilize it.
  • Ditto. I have the same truck with a Northstar Freedom camper. 4x4 with a 2x4 screwed to it across front of bed on a rubber mat. Traveled about 11,000 miles this year over Rockies and cross country with no movement in box. Great space to store lawn chairs.
  • You could fill that gap with wood. Doubled up pieces of 2 X 6, 2 X 8, 2 X 10, maybe a single piece of 4 X 6, what ever fits. Just lay it in there, before loading.
