- jrstout89ExplorerI have the set up in my signature. 10-11k loaded. 8.5 to 9.5 mpg towing. I'm happy with the performance but I only use it for towing around 5000 miles a year.
- DennispelExplorerI have an '06 V10 with 430grs. If I can hold O.D. I get 10mpg towing my 32'5th wheel (about 9200lbs loaded). I've been all over the rockies and out to Cali up over to yellowstone. I love this truck, keep it in its powerband and it will pull any mountain pass.
- nohurryExplorerFor me it really came down to wanting a new truck over used. I did look at a couple '10 F250's with the V10, but I decided to buy new. That way I got what Ford claims is all the new technology, a warranty, and better mileage. I'm seeing almost 14 empty, 9.5 towing hand calculated for the first 1500 miles. Should get a little better after I rack up about 5K miles if you can believe what some say. I have a close friend that owns a V10 and he's lucky if he gets 12 empty. I believe he has the 4:10 gears. I'll reiterate though, you don't buy these trucks for mileage. His truck is a '99 which is the old 2V motor. It's got 210K miles on it and stills runs and pulls hard. A testament to what was said earlier that the V10 is a proven worker. I've driven his truck many times, and I now have a new 250 with the 6.2. Which one would I rather have? Even if the V10 truck was newer, I'd rather have mine. So much nicer overall package, and yes I can tell you that, as was mentioned, the 6.2 pulls very hard off the line towing. It'll flatten out a bit, then come on strong again over 3500 RPM's. I bought a 2013 off the lot to get the rebates, which saved my quite a bit, but I somewhat regret not ordering to get the 4:30's. That is my one and only regret, but it's really not that bad given the weight I tow.

For me, personally, choose the proverbial 'devil you know.' The V-10 has been around for a decade and a half, is well known to ANY shop that could possibly need to work on it, and more or less had all the bugs worked out of it 10 years ago. The 6.2 is an impressive and powerful motor, no doubt... But it's also a NEW motor mated to a NEW transmission. ANY shop can fix a V-10... Not so much for a 6.2. If either one breaks, it's not likely to be in your driveway when it does. If you're hundreds or thousands of miles from home, which would you rather be trying to find parts for?
If you see double digits empty OR loaded, you're doing good... But don't expect it.
:S I don't get it. There is no way you could get mine down into the single digits empty - unless maybe you let it idle all night. i did that once but did not check the effect on the mileage. :B - MvanderExplorer

The 6.2L/4.30 truck performs better.
Hardley seems fair given the difference in diff ratio but intresting none the less. The v10 ive looked in to all had 410rears. Intresting too how much warmer the six speed trans was. Probably normal but still intresting. - mich800Explorer

Shocking... An engine with roughly the same horsepower and torque, but with a shorter first gear (3.974:1 versus 3.114:1), shorter second gear (2.318:1 versus 2.202:1) and a shorter final drive ratio (4.33 versus 3.73) out-pulled the V-10.
In other news, Today's Friday.
My point is: It's not an apples-to-apples test. First gear on the 6.2 is roughly 28% shorter than 1st on the V-10, and the rear end ratio is a 15% shorter final drive ratio... If you do the math, that gives it roughly 50% more grunt off the line, so it's not exactly rocket surgery that the new truck out-pulled the V-10.
For a closer apples-to-apples engine comparison? Start the 6.2 out in 2nd gear and see which one pulls it up the hill better. - Grit_dogNavigator IIWhile I think the 6.2 is pretty gutless unless its wound up tight and mileage is not any better than any 5.4 or 6.8 I've had in past trucks, it appears to be reliable. The big plus would be getting the 6 speed trans. Get the 6.2. It pulls as good as the V-10. IMO.

based on that its almost night and day, the 6.2 seems to pull so much stronger right off the line and simply keeps going strong. I wonder what the V10 with 4:30's would work like.
It would be night and day towards the V10. Beofre I lifted, my V10 with 4.10's would walk my work 6.2 with the 4.30's. While I will eventaully have to go to a 6.2, I'll keep my gas guzzler as long as possible.
makes sense, the 3v V10 makes more torque. - gijoecamExplorerTow/Haul mode engaged? (I forget where mine is at exactly...)
