What flavor of toilet chem is your favorite?

Howdy,
Been RVing for many years (about 47). In our recent past ,say 6 or 8years we ave been using the Walex Bio-active holding tank stuff. We get this from Campers World and then they get us. We always pay more than we think this stuff is worth and are wondering if there are other less expense places to get stuff (no, we do not shop at WM, it personal).

What do you use and where is it available. Oh by the way we are on the road or at a park for many months each year. So it you know of something that works on a regular basis (not camping but a few weeks a year) you know where as we drain the tank every 8 to 10 days, that would be us.

TIA Tomman
  • We use water... except every couple of months on a moving day when I add some dish detergent, borax crystals, and about 1/4 tank of fresh water. The "washing machine" action rolling down the road does a pretty good job of cleaning things out by the next stop. Many parks stipulate no chemicals in holding tanks due to their park septic systems.

  • Our previous 5er's holding tank (1976) and its design relationship with the toilet and venting, required us to use some strong perfumes. And when we got our new 5er (2004) I continued that odor masking process but realized that from inside our rig I never did smell the chemicals in the tank. Didn't take too long to figure out that if I can't smell the chemicals, I don't have an odor problem.

After checking out my black tank and venting design, I realized that the odors don't want to come up and out the toilet anymore, so no chemicals for us at all.
  • I use soap and the cheapest fabric softener I can find. I'm not letting the contents stew and brew so getting the contents slippery is my main tactic.
