Where can I find the vehicle ID number on a ledger trailer

I have been given a older Ledger travel trailer that was abandoned on my brother-in-law's property. I do not have a title so I have to go through the legal system to gain legal ownership of the trailer. It is approx 42 ft from bumper to hitch ball. ( I stepped it off at 14, 3ft steps) The trailer has 3 axles with 2 pull outs, 1 in the living room and 1 in the master bed room. The inside and outside are in pretty good shape. The trailer needs a little work inside and out but since it was given to me I can afford to spend a little money on it and have a nice trailer with very little money invested. I cannot find the Vin number on the trailer and I need that to start the process to obtain legal ownership of the trailer. Can anyone give me some ideas as to maybe what year it is, how long it actually is and where I can find info on this trailer. This is my first travel trailer and I am new to this forum. Thanks for your help. How do I post photos of this trailer to help in identification.

  • Yes the tag is still on the trailer. I know the trailer does not look like much from the photo but most of that is just dirt and it will clean up pretty well with a good wash job. I was shocked when I looked inside. No water leaks, very little trim damage and just a few bugs and dirt. The inside can be cleaned up real well also. Everything seems to work Okay. Carpet in good condition with no stains indicating leaks or spills. There is a burn spot on the vinyl floor in kitchen but not a large amount of damage. No rodent droppings or damage anywhere I can find. I was expecting to have to gut the trailer and go back with all new stuff. Not the case here. I will look for hidden damage but so far have not found any. I am fixing to retire so this will be a good little project for me. I am pretty handy and can fix probably any of the stuff that is wrong from heating, water, air, and electric. Labor charges will be free so I just need the material. Starting with a $0.00 cost I can afford to drop a few bucks into it and not get upside down in it. I was surprised, whoever owned it took real good care of it. Looks like they parked it there, set it up and walked away from it. Thank you for your help and suggestions. I will look on the frame and tung for the vin number along with all the other places you suggested. All the info on this thread has been a big help and I thank each of you for your input. Any other help or suggestions you can offer will be greatly appreciated.

Hopefully you have an old tag to start with when going to the DMV. I would look real hard along the tongue where it just meets the trailer on the drivers side. Most INFO panels are here. Like stated above some trailer have the VIN# stamped into the trailer frame at this location.

I doubt you will save much money getting it fixed up. To do it right it will literally eat your lunch haha.. Be a fun project however...

Some newer trailer usually have info pasted on the inside of cabinet doors in the kitchen area. Newer trailers usually have a hugh folder of pamphlets and data sheets of everything installed in the trailer somewhere. Mine was stuffed in next to the water heater - look in all drawers and cabinet doors... Might find the info written on one of those documents...

If you still have the original TAG NUMBER DMV should be able to track it down for you... Even in Oklahoma haha...

  • Yes Robsouth that is the trailer. Thanks for adding the photo for me. Yes I will probably have to spend a day at the DMV and I hope you are correct in thinking they still have the info on file concerning the last registered owner.
  • If it was registered in 2000 then State should have the info.......it wasn't the dark ages :B

Sounds like a trip with a lunch to the DMV is in order.
  • Tatest. This is TT is located up in your part of Oklahoma. It is around the Lake Tenkiller area. It was left on some land that was sold to my brother in law. He does not want it on his land and said I could have it if I move it off his land. I will move it and get a title to it eventually.
  • I am in Oklahoma. I am familiar with the process for our state to register abandoned vehicles and travel trailers that is why in need a vin number. It was last registered in our state as a TT in 2000. I do not know if the State will have records on it from that far back. I am going to check with them and see if they still have records. It is definitely a travel trailer. It is not a mobile home. Ledger was made by the American Travel Systems located in Indiana. The company is out of business and that is probably why I can't find much on this TT. If you could tell me how to post photos to this thread I will post them and you would see it is in fact a TT and maybe that will help someone in the identification and information on this trailer. I know it is long but it has all the features and options found in older travel trailers to include slide outs and an awning. I suspect it would be classed as a 39 or 40 ft TT.
  • Check on, under, around the tongue for any numbers stamped in metal.

Also look for any info sheets on back of cabinet doors, closets, inside drawers.
(Shot in the dark BUT they may still exist)

Made by American Travel Systems (1989-2000)
1990 was first year they had a 3 axle model. And first year for slide out was 1996 but i can find any models with 2 slide outs.

Here is some info via NADA......LINK

    Good luck!
  • At that size and age, it may not have a VIN? Many house trailers, later to be called mobile himes, were not treated as vehicles in some states. Equipment differences are ofter a clue, house trailers were towable but not equipped for use while travelling.
  • Never heard of the brand, and you don't say what State you're in. Rules are different from one place to another! Generally, and if you're trying to get it on the road, my advice is to go to your local DMV and ask about how to Title abandoned vehicles. Most States have a process for that.
