Why did you buy a Ford over a Dodge?

Why did you purchase a Ford? The wife and I have been looking at new 2017 Ford, Dodge and GMC dually diesels. It seems that a lot of people on the forums and others in general say, get the Dodge. I guess because of the Cummins engine and the upgraded Aisin transmission. My brother in law who is retired said that he mostly sees Dodges in RV parks these days.

But, the Ford, just looking it over, seems to be put together better overall and the four door truck has more room in the back seat, it seems to us. Yes, the Ford is more money, but I want this truck to last long into retirement. The Ford seems like someone actually cared about the design and how it was put together. I don't like how the Ford has very little if no room to even put your hand in the engine area. Salesman told me that the service department usually just takes off the front end of the truck to do any work on a Ford because it is much easier that way.

Did you purchase your truck from an auto broker or some other way to save?

Still shopping.....looking for a nice used truck also.

Ordered through the dealer from the factory. Took about 5 weeks to arrive.
  • All 3 major brands are good. Drive them all and pick the price that fits your budget and the one that fits your butt the best.

I have a long time buddy who has also been a mechanic for 35 years. He was a total Chevy guy but after working on truck diesels for so mmany years, is now a dedicated Ram/Cummins guy.
There are certain jobs he just hates, like replacing a water pump on a Duramax or injector harness or glowplugs on a Ford.
  • I bought a Ford because I like them better. The seats in the Ram seriously hurt my back after a few hour ride. The Chevy trucks I could afford tend to rust out around here and I always feel cramped in a GM truck. Dodges Rust pretty bad to. We are talking Tennessee not even the great white north. Fords seem to me to be better built with better sheet metal and they are tons more comfy for my frame.

Plus Rams have a stupid symmetric problem that you don't see until you see it and now that I have seen it I can't un-see it. So that automatically counts them out until they fix it.

The top of the bedrails do not line up with the bottom of the windows and it drives my OCD crazy. Every other truck manages to get the Bed right. Not Ram..the bed must have been designed somewhere else for something else.

    Thanks!

  • I looked at all three diesels and it worked out to Ram, Ford and then GM/Chevy third. Put the Cummins in the Ram or Ford and that's the one I would have picked, although I did give a slight edge to the Ram even not considering the Cummins because the chassis was so much better. Bear in mind this was 2015 models so the Super Duty was an old dog at that point and it really showed - I'm sure 2017+ is a whole different ballgame. There were some things that held the GM trucks back a bit. Real world price being one, but I also didn't like the IFS or DEF tank location. When I bought my truck there wasn't a material difference in real world pricing between the Ram and Ford - both were less than the GMs.
  • I was a hard core Chevy owner from my first car in 1962 until 1987 when a Chevy salesman made me mad and caused me to look at Fords. Bought one and have owned nothing but since then for both me and the DW. Reliability has never been an issue with any vehicle I have ever owned, Chevy or Ford. Never a major repair with any. Dodge/Ram I just never particularly like the looks of, inside or out. But that just falls under personal preference.
  • BLASPHEMY I SAY!!! :B Seriously, all three make good trucks. It all comes down to personal preference for creature comforts and of course price. If you like the look and feel of the Ford then that is the truck for you. I would certainly like more bells and whistles on our Ram ctd but it is serving us very well so why fix what ain't broke.
  • I bought used and there were three reasons why I got the Ford: 1. built-in brake controller (others didn't have this yet in the years I could afford) 2. Ford fenders, beds, and tailgates weren't rusted through like on the Rams (again, with the years I could afford) 3. The Duramax GMs were a LOT more expensive in the years I was looking at (had to get one with a zillion miles to be in my price ballpark)
