I-25 or US-285 from I-40 to I-10

We will be leaving Seattle around the !st of Nov. Most likely will take I-5 South to Bakersfield then east to Needles on CA-58/I-40. I want to take I-40 across AZ. and N.M. (weather permitting). I would like to know the pros and cons On the drive from Albuquerque to Las Cruces on I-25 and US-285 from Clines Corners to Ft. Stockton. We have not been on either of these roads. Any input will be great help. Thanks...John
  • TyroneandGladys; We used the route your suggesting in 2011 when we went Montrose and The Black of the Gunnison, we picked it up at Grand Jct, the whole rte. is is the route we were going to take on the way up to Seattle this year but trouble with the rig and time constraints changed our route, Maybe next year. Also thanks to all of the other people for all the advice. Everything depends on the weather during the 1st week of Nov. If we take 58/40 out of Bakerfield we will stop in Kingman, then we will drive to somewhere around Grants NM (396mi) then to Las Cruses (271mi). I like to drive only around 300 miles or less a day. From there it's Ft. Stockton, Kerrville and home. With a 2 day stay in Woodburn OR, We'll have 10 days to get home before the in-laws arrive. We can get home in 8 to 9 days provided the weather in the Siskyous and N. AZ and N. NM cooperates. I really liked the drive over I-40 the one year we made that run. Thanks again...Be Safe to All...John.
  • Came across I 40 mic Sept. It's good all the way. Not much in the way of steep hills. 285 is a good rd but not much to look at, scrub and tumbleweeds. Drove it many a time in a truck. When it says watch for flooding, be sure and watch. I have seen many flash floods out there if it's raining.
  • We, too, would take 285 from I-40. You won't have any traffic and it's so much more relaxing. The scenery will be just fine.
  • Since we probably won't have any extra time as my wife's mother (95) is flying into Houston on the 12th I'm wondering which route is more scenic, the atlas shows a dotted line along I-25 and that's the way we pick scenic drives, as we are not hikers or bikers due to knee and hip problems. Thanks to everyone for the info...John.
  • I've done both and much prefer 285. Lots of places to stop in Artesia, Roswell, and Carlsbad. Have done the Walmart free parking in both Carlsbad and Fort Stockton. If you're just passing thru, there's nothing better. We usually need to buy a loaf or a jug of milk anyway, so why not just park a little longer?....

Stop and see the caverns if you've never been -- it's well worth a couple hours.

Gas choices get slim south of Carlsbad to Fort Stockton...
  • Either one is good. We prefer 285 because it avoids El Paso.
Down I 25, there is the Isleta Casino RV park just south of Albuquerque.
Further south, Socorro has an rv park on the south end of town.
on 285, there isn't much in the way of rv parks until get down around Roswell, and I can't tell you about them because we usually just do a walmart overnighter there.
Ft. Stockton doesn't have much either, but we have stayed at Comanche Land rv park several times in the past. It serves a lot of oil well workers these days, but they are just guys working hard like thousands of others.
  • Drove 40 to ALB and 25 to Las Cruces end of May. Beautiful roads and no issues.
  • Hello MottissMT36RL, I-25 is an easy drive, well maintained and has places to stop in the towns that you go through, fuel, eating, rest stops etc. You don't have some of those options along 285, and some of that highway is only a two lane road. You will also catch some traffic lights going through towns. All in all it's also a well maintained road just some what slower. We have traveled both roads and like I-25 better. JMHO Take care..be safe
