Maine: Skowhegan to Montpelier on State Route 2?

In July, we'll be taking a 35' gasser, pulling our toad across Maine. Is route 2 ok for the trip, or should we add the 100 miles, taking I95 to I89?

  • Rt. 2 is the major east/west route across the Tristate region. Even though it's only a 2 lane road it's very well maintained. It's one of the best road to see rural America, the views, the small towns, the open farm lands and the attractions along the way makes it an enjoyable trip... Don't be in a hurry, it worth the trip.

Ditto. I have driven this route many times, and in fact live just off Rt 2 in the summer. Almost all of the reconstruction of the road is done so it is a very smooth ride. We drove the road West from Bangor to St Johnsbury at the height of the fall foliage last year and it was a one of the most spectacular rides we have ever taken, and I've been traveling that road since the mid 1960s! I have never even thought of substituting the Interstates.
  • I had the misfortune of driving this route when a long stretch was very rough gravel for many miles. They were completely rebuilding the road bed. Bet its really nice now.

Yup, they do that every once in a while up here, New England winters are pretty rough on our roads. However, with all the tuck traffic on Rt. 2 they keep that road in good shape.

Right! We went through that mess (in Western Maine) as well. The next year the job had been done and the new road was wide and smooth. You can get a slight look at what the old road was like just East of Wilton, ME, where a few miles have for some reason not been improved, but after that it's fine sailing all the way to Skowhegan
