Route from new Orleans to Beaumont tx

Has anyone used rt.90 from new Orleans to Baumont TX rather than go over the bridge at Baton Rouge? How is the road for s 30' tt?
  • Get on 190 wherever you want to, go through Opelousas, and on through Kinder. If needed you can overnight at Coushatta Casino just north of Kinder on 165. Stay on 190 westbound and it becomes 12 through Mauriceville Tx and on to I-10 into Beaumont.
If you use I-10 through Lake Charles be aware the road has a very bad spot at Sulphur. It feels like it will launch your rig. Hwy 190 has mostly 55mph through LA. If you have out of state plates they will enforce that. Hwy 12 in TX will have some sections of 75mph. Some of that has construction zones.
  • Good and more up-to-date advice from prichardson. I echo the comment about I-10 being rough around Sulphur, LA. Be aware that the I-210 bypass around Lake Charles is down to 1 lane each direction on the high level bridge over the river due to a widening project. It backs up pretty badly, especially during rush hour.

If you are not just passing through, there are things to see south of Lafayette, including Avery Island, home of Tabasco sauce.
  • US90 from New Orleans going west for the first 20 miles or so is 2 lane then becomes 4 lane until Lafayette with portions of it being interstate quality.
Between New Iberia and Lafayette it is rough and is subject to urban rush hour congestion. West of Lafayette US90 parallels I-10 is 2 lane and goes thru numerous towns until it merges with I-10 in Lake Charles. I-10 is rough in the Sulphur area and there is construction at Orange. Note that US90 does not go to Alexandria - that is 90 miles north of Lafayette on I-49.
  • Yes zi was thinking of going thru M organ city to Alexandria and then west on 10 to Baumont

What day of the week and time will you be crossing? East to west is best direction. Neither direction is good 7-9 am and 3-7 pm. Backups can be expected any time Od day. You could get off on Airline hey when entering B R cross what we call the old bridge the get back on the interstate at hwy 415 which is just about 5 miles on the other side of the river. Personally I would go through BR all the way and take my chances.

The question is confusing since bob213 may be talking about the US-190 bridge north of the I-10 bridge in Baton Rouge/Port Allen or US-90 as a way to avoid that bridge and Baton Rouge altogether by coming south out of New Orleans across the Mississippi, going through Morgan City, New Iberia and rejoining I-10 at Lafayette.

I actually use the LA-415 route to jump over from I-10 and use US-190/LA-12/TX-12 to cross Louisiana parallel to I-10 and rejoin the interstate in Vidor, TX. Better road and much less stressful. I don't have any qualms about crossing the I-10 Mississippi bridge other than the traffic involved in the approach in Baton Rouge.

US-90 from New Orleans to Lafayette is OK, though it is a little rough in spots. It is an interesting drive through Cajun country. You can use I-49 to go on up to US-190 and avoid I-10 in Louisiana as I said before.

I cannot speak to the approach and crossing of the Mississippi using the US-190 bridge in Baton Rouge from experience.
