- Dick_BExplorerAre you really sure you don't want to drive the interstates thru the `mountains'?
Google maps shows it is some 2100 miles and 31 hours via interstates. Eliminating the interstates would require you to leave now. - OzlanderExplorer

Total BS. - Road_PhantomExplorerWe realize Interstates are viable and necessary at times, but we would like to find some alternate scenic routes in West Virginia and Kentucky that we can include in our trip. Thanks.
- midnightsadieExplorer IInice idea, but theres them mountains to climb and those hair pin turns,do both ,get out of mountain area and jump on the local roads.
- 2gypsies1Explorer IIIFirst, I'd suggest you order the 'Mountain Directory for Truckers and RVers' - Eastern Edition to make sure these highways are suitable for RVs.

It's hard to do both West Virginia and Kentucky east/west on secondary roads in a RV, especially Kentucky. This would be a suggested route for a combo of secondary roads and interstates - beautiful in October with siteseeing options enroute.
2244 miles from Scranton, PA to ElPaso, TX:
I-81 out of Scranton to Winchester, Virginia then 50 west into West Virginia to Junction, WV.
220 south to Covington, VA and on to Daleville, VA
I-81 SW/I-77 to Max Meadows, VA and on to Wytheville, VA and Knoxville, KY
I-75 out of Knoxville into Chattanooga, TN
I-24 North a short distance to Exit 127 and SR64 west into Memphis, TN
I-40 out of Memphis to Little Rock, Arkansas
I-30 out of Little Rock to Texarkana, TX and pick up US82 at New Boston, TX to Wichita Falls, TX to US 277 at Seymour, TX to Haskell, TX - bypassing north Dallas
US277 to US380 West to Brownfield, TX to US 62 to Seminole, TX
US62/US180 west to Carlsbad, TX (Carlsbad Nat'l Park)
Continue west on US62 into El Paso - Chuck_thehammerExplorerlike the others said..
low clearances.... Trees, wires/cables...
steep hills .. up and down. many quick changing turns and angles.
I love WV... on the motorcycle.
keep your rig's HEAD LOW..
Travel Safe.. I will be heading to Mission Texas in November.
I used to travel WV .. North and South before I 77 was built. Fun/beautiful and SLOW. and sometimes dangerous. - Road_PhantomExplorerGreat responses here. Thanks. I will definitely reconsider the secondary roads.
- padredwNomadA couple of things for you to consider: Kentucky has a fine, and unique, system of Parkways. For expample you could drive from Lexington, KY (a fine place to stop) to Elizabethtown on the Bluegrass Parkway, then west on the Western Kentucky Parkway to the area of Land Between the Lakes. You could then cross the river on I-55 from Dyersburg, TN and pick up I-55 down to junction with I-40 at West Memphis, AR. This route avoids both Nashville and Memphis (and the construction there).
I agree very much with 2gypsies about taking US 82 across North Texas to avoid DFW.
Without going in too much detail, here is the outline by city: Hagerstown to Morgantown. Morgantown to Charleston, WV (yes an interstate, but scenic and good parks along the way). Charleston to Lexington, KY and then as above. I have made this route towing and the portion from Lexington to Texarkana many times, following the Kentucky parkways and I-155 along the Mississippi River. - Road_PhantomExplorerI am looking into the suggested routes and they look very promising. Thanks for the help.
