traveling through Dallas

We will be traveling from Houston to Ardmore, Oklahoma. Any suggestions on the best route through (or around) Dallas?

Just a slight modification: if I were at Greenville, TX I would go on up US 69 to intersect with US 82 then west to I-35. The area between Greenville and Denton through McKinney is becomming increasingly congested and there are many, many traffic signals. This used to be our usual route, but we have found that driving on up to US 82 is a much more pleasant experience.
Came this way in October and the construction between Denton and McKinney is really a problem.
  • Unless you are just truly adverse to traffic, just go straight thru Dallas. Even if you hit some heavy traffic, you will be in Ardmore set up at your site and enjoying yourself long before you would by taking an out of the way bypass route.

I live just north of Dallas and do drive thru it, sometimes even during rush hour. I hate traffic as much as the next person. But it has never made sense to me to go miles out of the way, on smaller highways, small towns, lower speed limits, traffic lights, and a lot of extra time to miss a few miles of traffic that you will be thru in a relatively short time.

  • I would go US 84 to US69 to Greenville TX, US 380 west back to I-35. We do not drive through Dallas and we used to live there! a few more miles and some small towns but a lot less stressful!
  • Yes, there is a lot of construction, but traffic moves well. Take the 635 to the 75 to see the 'high five' interchange. Quite impressive.

If you need a stopover, Lake Ray Roberts is a huge, pretty park.
  • Middle of the day or on a weekend.

Two choices in Dallas to get from I-45 to I-35E. From I-45 you can take I-30 west to I-35E. Or go slightly farther north and take loop 366/Woodall Rogers Freeway over to I-35E. I would opt for the 366/Woodall Rogers route myself. As you are passing downtown on I-45 stay in the right lanes and watch for the sign "TO 35E WACO/DENTON". And on 366/Woodall stay in the right lanes for exit to I-35E.

You probably will have no problem, but always be prepared for traffic backups for one reason or the other.

If you have google maps on your smart phone, check it as you enter the Dallas area. If there are traffic backups on a particular stretch of road it will show up as red on google maps with an explaination of the problem. If 366/Woodall shows red then the I-30 to I-35E may be better if it shows green.
  • Thanks! Had heard there was a lot of construction in downtown. Traveling up 45 then hitting 35. Happy Thanksgiving!!

Downtown Dallas is so small I didn't even notice I had gone thru it! :B

You have already gone thru Houston which I will NEVER go thru with a MH ever again. So the worst is behind you. Just go right thru Dallas.
