Lake McConaughy Recommendations

This question goes out the those who have been there or live nearby?

We are planning to head out to Lake McConaughy next year (2015). Looking for a good place to camp w/full hookups. Need not be directly on the water.

RV Park Reviews really does not have much to go on, surprisingly. Those who have been, where is a good place to go? Best time of year?

Looking at Lone Eagle and Little Thunder campgrounds as the top contenders so far. Also, where is a good place to park your boat when camping? Do the CG's have overflow parking or just park at the marina(s)? (20ft pontoon w/tow vehicle)

Thanks!
  • 3-4 years back we found the Lone Eagle something campground up on the north shore maybe on the eastern side almost ... way up high ... it was by far nicer than anything else on the lake we had seen (and we saw a lot). Can be very windy, but that campground was the best by far. We ended up prior to that at some really lousy rv parks which were nasty and the lake was 1/2 empty (gone). I believe it largely recovered in recent years. lone eagle
  • Thanks for the info group!

The DW and I are goung to take a "field trip" lol out this weekend to scout it out and see what works for us. It's only a 3 hr drive for us. Ill post my findings!
  • There is one I forgot. Eagle Canyon Hideaway on the south side of Big Mac. Very nice campground with full hooks BUT the road to it is absolutely horrible. Very washed out. Unless they have repaved the road leading into it I would probably skip it which actually is unfortunate because the site is very nice.
  • Whenever we go to Big Mac we always stay at Country View Campgrounds. It is located on the south side of the interstate. They have everything from tent sites to full hookups. Long spots to put you camper and boat in one spot. Very well taken care of place and nice owners. Dirty/gravel pads that sometimes need leveling but nothing dramatic.

Lake Ogallala SRA has only electric hookup with community showers. It is very nicely shaded with trees. Clean. Right on the lake.

Vans is nice. Spots are a little tighter than the two above. Has a little store where you can get supplies. It has a boat ramp but depending on the water level you may or may not be able to launch your boat from there. You can launch from the beach if you have the capability. It gets very crowded on popular weekends like Memorial or 4th of July with partiers so a little noisier.

As for time of the year it all depends on what you want to do. More importantly since you have a boat I look at the lake levels because the boat ramp access is gonna depend on them. Msg me if you need details.

    Hope this helps
  • We camp hosted there last summer. We were at Lone Eagle they only have as I recall 7-8 FHU sites and these fill up fast. Make your reservations early. Thunder Bay is another state area with FHU not sure how many. Jump on the state park site and you can see the number.

Lake Ogallala SRA is only electric with water spigots throughout the park.

On the south side of the lake there is Van's Lakeview Lodge and campground which has FHU.

If you need additional info message me I'll give you my number.
  • If not being on the water for Lake Mac is a consideration, I'd recommend the Lake Ogallala SRA campground which is directly below the Kingsley Dam which holds back Lake Mac. It is nicely shaded by mature trees and generally a quiet campground. You can get more info at THIS CLICKETY. This is our choice when visiting the Lake Mac area.

    Good luck and happy camping!!
  • Unless things have changed, you really need to think about your dogs. Last time I stayed at the lake, my Golden was infested so bad, she had to be dipped three times and the rig fumigated. We were unaware of the problems they were having there and carried them to New Mexico before discovering how seriously we were infected.
