Newburgh, NY campgrounds?

Thanks again for your help. We are on our first trip south to VA and will travel through Newburgh, NY. I see a KOA in North Newburgh north of 84. Is this the closest CG for easy in out one night? We will be coming from Sturbridge, MA and don't want to drive more than 3 hrs.

We are heading towards 209 and the Delaware Water Gap then towards Hershey Lancaster area, taking our time. Figure the further south we get we can slow down as it will be warmer.

Would appreciate any advice from those who have traveled this way recently.

We went from MA to DC 2 weeks ago and stayed 2 nights at the KOA. It is nice there, it was our 2nd stay there, first was on our way to Hershey a couple years ago. We pick this campground to be sure we cross the Hudson there rather than closer to the city.

Or if you want to check out a really great motorcycle museum, stop at Motorcyclepedia in Newburgh . Super collection of Indians( every year that they were in business) ,Harleys, some Ariels,Vincents, etc.


We stay at the KOA when we are in the area. The upper section is wooded and OK for most units, the lower section is more open and big rig friendly.

We don't mind back roads and less traffic...being newbies to this traveling and major highways. A bit scared of the high fast traffic with a fifth wheel.

As far as 22 v 78, I actually prefer 22. Yeah, there is traffic around the Whitehall area, but in my opinion not too bad. 78 is a lot hillier. As mentioned, where the two highways converge is a mess no matter which one you're on.

I keep our TT is Gardiner NY about 4 miles from the Newburgh KOA. I've done this trip a few times taking 87s to 287s to 78w when heading south. It cuts out the problems of construction on I-84 in Pennsylvania.

Will you be stopping in the deleware water gap area? If you're just traveling straight through, an alternate route would be to take 87 s to 287 s to 78 w. Simple route, and except for rush hour, not too much traffic.

As far as 22 v 78, I actually prefer 22. Yeah, there is traffic around the Whitehall area, but in my opinion not too bad. 78 is a lot hillier. As mentioned, where the two highways converge is a mess no matter which one you're on.

They also have there own bus to take you for a day trip to NYC. May have stopped for the year.

Agree - not as convenient to the Interstate as any of us would like, but not overly difficult, either. We used this KOA this past summer - also liked it very much. They have the whole range of sites from big, roomy, and shaded pull-thru's to basic patches of gravel with hook-ups. What you'll get will maybe depend on how full it is at the time. Just be sure you have enough of your own groceries as the store has mainly souvenir items. And how's this for a twist - there is a wine shop on the premises.

Both highways see significant truck traffic. Enjoy & safe travels.

On edit: I-84 is undergoing bridge replacement just north of Milford, PA and is one lane both directions. Coming from NY, take the first exit in PA (Matamoras) and get on 209 there. Yes, it will take you through the town of Milford, but it beats sitting. It is easily navigable and the town is actually quite picturesque when you get in the city proper.

Exactly what we are looking for. Again, great people here and perfect advice; and wine shop...here's hoping a variety from the Finger Lakes region! Which is also on our bucket list!

Traffic on new roads is quite scary, thank you for any suggestions.

The KOA is a little bit off the highway, but not so much that it should preclude you from stopping there. Other than the KOA, there's not much of a choice. It is a nice campground. I also second stopping at OCC. I never really watched the TV show, but really enjoyed my visit there. The attention to detail on their builds is fantastic.

We have only been to the Newburgh KOA and it was fine - better than most KOAs we've been to, in fact.

unfortunately not many rv parks in the area. The KOA is 9 miles from I-84 if that helps.
