San Antonio, TX to Gulf Shores, AL

We are planning a trip, but in reverse order. DW's sister & clan want to spend the last week in May (2014) in Gulf Shores AL, and she who must be obeyed (DW) wants to visit with them. This is the week directly following Memorial Day (ugh) and was chosen because of grand kids, school and all. My plea for help is thus: We plan to visit San Antonio, to see the Alamo, as DW has never seen it, and then on to Gulf Shores. Where between the two can a B camper, with simple needs, lay low till the holiday blows over, and then arrive in Gulf Shores later in the week to revel in the family fun? I would truly like to be in and out of San Antonio a good day prior to the start of the holiday weekend, at a nice wooded, shaded campground, cooking in my dutch oven, sipping a cold brew, over looking a body of water, and being thankful to be there in anticipation of the upcoming week. H E L P !
  • MCDDY, I think this could work. Super! thanks for the info. Just wonder how it would be to lay over for the holiday weekend. Or if we could even get in.
  • Looking at the time frame and distances, Acadiana Campsites in Lafayatte, La. fits the bill except for a waterfront. Shady it is!! Your Class B will be just right there although we've camped there in a 33' MH with no problems. Plus you're in Lafayette which has probably the finest dining in the state. Check your camping directory.

    Enjoy and come Hungry.

  • Just over half way is the town of Duson, LA (just before Lafayette). There's an RV park called Frog City, and has all pull thru sites, spotlessly clean showers, great hook-ups, and is right off I-10. We stay there every trip to and from Texas. They are also a Passport America and Good Sam park.

That's Sam Houston Jones State Park. They have some sites that are full hookup besides some with just water and electricity. Don't know about reservations for Louisiana State Parks.

Also, Stephen F. Austin State Park west of Houston off IH-10 near Sealy is nice. It has full hookups and is wooded also. You can reserve a camping site in Texas State Parks, but you can't reserve a particular site.

Village Creek State Park north of Beaumont about 10 miles near Lumberton Texas is wooded-doubt that they have full hookups though.

Since this is going to be around a holiday, reservations are definitely recommended.
  • In Gulf Shores you probably want to stay at Gulf State Park. If you get a site on the lagoon, you can walk to the beach in less than 10 minutes.

Park has a FHU, pool, local TV/internet reception, beach, fishing pier, zipline, boat rental, lake fishing (alligators don't like swimmers in their lake though). Lots of local restaurants and nearby Wally World to replenish your cold beverage supply.

Not a lot of trees since Hurricane Ivan came through but they have about 500 sites which you reserve a space and pick one when you arrive.
  • We'd like to get at least half between the two or even closer to Gulf Shores, and the only requirement would be elect. Rather not vary too far off the direct route, but that's not a must have either. I'd prefer to stay under 75 miles off the direct route would be fine. Then we'd also like to find a campsite near Gulf Shores, when the family leaves we can stay and enjoy the area.

    Stephen F Austin State Park.

    San Felipe Texas.

    Just West of Houston.

Nice sites and has a river running through it.
  • Do you want FHUs? Do you want the campground to be about 1/2 the distance between SA and Gulf Shores? With this info, we can probably give you some better suggestions.
