- jjjandrbakerExplorerI'm going to throw this out there, too... My favorite time to go camping around here is in June-August. The state parks always have openings, and I am always alone on the trails in the summer. I LOVE the heat, except when I am dressed up to go somewhere. But, I have learned to carry a small cooler with six bottles of chilled water in my backpack when hiking. It is all about hydration.

So true!! Timing is everything, though. There are places we just know to avoid during either of the three rush hours. My youngest goes to UTSA, which is exactly 7.3 miles from our house. Normally, it is a 15-20 minute drive. At rush hour, it can take 45 minutes. - Major_DadExplorer

We are in San Antonio right now. Weather is on the coolish side. Traffic is horrendous and makes me want to just stay in the RV.
The Alamo Bowl is on Monday 12/30, so the traffic will only let up on 1/1/14. In general, our traffic has been rapidly increasing over the past few years since our economy is booming (Eagle Ford oil boom, relocation of corporations from the Rust Belt and California). Our traffic is nowhere near as bad as Houston or Austin, but we are trending in that direction.
That being said, weather is spotty here but overall is pretty good all winter. When we get cold weather, it is usually warm again in a couple days. As far as heat goes, I'd avoid San Antonio May through September if I didn't have to be here to work. - garmpExplorer IIWe were there in mid-October and it was fantastic. Great weather. DW got to see the Alamo and the River Walk. Which she hasn't stopped talking about yet. We were fortunate enough to camp at Ft. Sam Houston military base, just north of town. A very short ride to a parking lot, $10 a day, and a very, very short walk to the Alamo. Cross the street and you're at the rive walk. October was great for us!
- BB_TXNomad"Too hot" is such a personal variable it is hard to define. Since I am a native Texan and used to the heat I consider late Sept to early Nov the perfect time. Late Sept can still be a little warm, but late Nov can be cold. And if I am out sightseeing I would rather be a little warm than cold.
Was in Fredericksburg (80 miles northwest of San Antonio) just before Thanksgiving this year and a cold front came thru. For 4 days temps ranged from morning lows of 32-34 to afternoon highs of 36-38 with cold rain and occasional freezing rain/sleet each day. That is not the norm, but that is not the first time we have experienced that over the years in Nov. either.
Late Nov thru March may be T shirt/shorts or it may be heavy coat, you just never know from one day to the next.
And we had a brutal ice storm in north Texas the first week of Dec with closed highways, power outages, downed trees. Again not the norm, but typical Texas winter weather. Today it is sunshine and near 60. - TexasShadowExplorer IILate Oct through Nov is usually fine. Sept will be too hot.
- Davion206ExplorerWe were there the first half of October, 2012 and it was too hot for us to enjoy. I agree the traffic was horrible.

We've found that December through early March helps us avoid the brutal Texas heat. Winter is a fantastic time to visit Texas, AZ, FL and other southern tier states. - jnharleyExplorerWe are in San Antonio right now. Weather is on the coolish side. - amandasgrammaExplorerWe did it in December......was awesome weather! I can't wait to go back....
