Would LOVE thoughts on this. Perfectly houses both my Honda 2000 generators (with parallel kit) and a 6 gal marine fuel tank. Got my grill on top for now but will probably keep it in the bed due to weight. Doing 8300 miles this summer and will spent some time boondocking (ok, we're going to Walmart it when not in parks with full hookups.) DW probably going through menopause and NEEDS a/c. Added a hard start capacitor to the A/C and changed every single light bulb in the rig to LED (including an awning strip--SO cool!) The hitch was welded to a 1/4" steel bar that's bolted to the frame just behind the thin, stinky slinky-hiding bumper. Took it out for a test ride and it definitely affected the handling; going to reinforce the bar and add tongue weight in the form of the spare tire and reassess the handling issue. Will most likely keep the generators in the bed of the pickup for the drive then put them in the cage and connect at the Wally worlds we stop at; figure we'll resupply while the rig cools off and after we get permission from the manager. Oh yeah, going to add reflectors as well:CHope to see ya out there!

Probably would be OK if you did not drive with the box installed, ie, you carried the setup in the bed of your truck and then put it in place when you arrive.

Don't understand the thinking of moving it to run.Mine runs fine in the truck bed and the camper cord reaches it fine.Maybe I'm just lazy but I don't get it.

Here is my setup I have used for 8 years and thousands and thousands of miles. The cargo rack is hooked to a frame mounted receiver hitch.

Notice my high security chain I run through my honda EU3000 then through the hitch safety chain slots and gas can if there. LOL

I have actually had 5" wide metal braces welded to the carrier and through the bottom of my Honda so it is one solid piece. It would take two for sure to walk off with it.

The single hitch mount may be great for a static load or even on the back of your pickup. Placing on the back of the fiver, the hitch goes through much more stress due to bouncing. I realized this when following behind fivers and after seeing the damage that my aluminum bike did to my ladder after a cross country trip.

I carried a tool box on the back of a formerly owned fiver with two EU 2000i generators but mounted on two 2" receivers instead of one. Still checked it frequently for cracks that could be catastrophic.

Link is not working for me? I used receiver tube and welded it to the underside of the frame that was used for the supports then fabricated a rack for mine to sit on then the male receiver tube ends welded to the rack and it slid into the female 2.5" receiver tube under the RV. Here's the build thread on my frame extension.

Using a hitch receiver to make the assembly removable is a good idea, but you need to beef up the attaching points. That back of the TT is subject to a lot of bouncing up and down, so the design not only has to handle the weight it has to control the movement as well.

I's probably consider using a 1" or even 2" receiver and mate on each corner of that thing... giving it a balanced "docking" connection to the rig.

If someone hits that thing.. it's gonna kill their vehicle... i like it. sheesh build me one!. lol

have thought about mounting my eu3000 on the hitch beam for my fifth wheel...but that puts it right next to the head of my bed.
and would have to climb up a ladder to refuel.

so just keeping it in the bed of the truck. not much chance of a walk away from there. just add a extended exhaust to get it way up there and away from camp.

Oops....guess I should've clarified a bit. The Pinto reference was priceless LOL! I'm a firefighter so NO...there will be no cooking or heat above the gas tanks...The grill was just there to save some space but may be moved for weight and/or handling while towing. I don't anticipate carrying fuel back there....I'll calculate how much gas our setup uses and fuel for each boondocking night (about 6 or 7 nights out of the trip.) Beautiful setups burbman and mallard, going to show my welder buddy the pics to possibly reinforce...Mallard, do you have any pics of the underside? I'm leaning toward removing the thin bumper completely and welding a receiver to each side of the frame (the setup needs to be removeable). It's also meant to provide security at the campsites/cities we visit as I'm a bit leery of leaving the generators in the pickup full time.

To the OP the box looks solid but the attachment point maybe a bit weak? My real concern is carrying the gas gas on the rear is a real hazard.
Also a grill above the gas tanks! Really! The gas cans will omit fumes.
The whole idea needs to give more consideration to safety.
