replacing current ceiling fan

current ceiling fan is a cheapo 40# flush mount fan. It buzzes, makes humming/vibrating sound and doesn't really move lots of air.

Does anyone have experience with upgrading your trailer fan with one that is much larger and reputable? I'd like to have a 52" fan instead.

Could I get one at Home Depot or Lowes? Have enough clearance from galley slide etc.

Thanks.
  • What voltage is the current fan running off of? The cheapo on in our MH died early. Found out it was a 12V fan. Didn't have any other option but go with the direct replacement.
  • If you have to resize the opening in the ceiling, if you have wood trusses, it's real easy. I installed a semi-recessed ceiling heater in a previous TT and just framed in a complete new opening (using 2x2 IIRC) and screwed into the wood trusses.

If aluminum trusses, it will be a bit more difficult and you'd want to drill small pilot holes to get a screw started or use a self-tapper sheet metal screw. With alum, trusses, for larger things like AC units, through-the-roof fans, etc., they just use a piece of 2x lumber at the factory but it gets screwed down into from the roof side. If you are faced with aluminum trusses, I *think* attaching a couple of small framing pieces with angle brackets would be fine. You'd be amazed at what they do at the factory to alum. trusses.

Cutting luan plywood on a ceiling is very easy. Just use a sharp utility knife and go slowly and make multiple passes. Mark cuts for a new opening with painters tape first.
  • I just did this a month ago in our 5er. Found a Westinghouse model 78108 at a local store, but they have them on Amazon. We had an ugly polished brass one that made a lot of noise. We really didn't really care that much about how this one performed as we liked the all white look and the fact it has a light. With the new one it blends into the ceiling with being all white and it is a lot quieter than the old.
  • I would think a replacement fan would work as long as the clearances as required by the fan maker are met, and you have enough clearance to walk under it. You have already determined the clearance for width will be ok. I would go for it.:)

  • Current fan is recessed 1.75 inches in ceiling. Factory design.

Blade height from fan assembly to ceiling is 4 inches. slopes to 8 inches from ceiling at end of blade.

My apologies on clarification of type of fan it is.....it's a ceiling hugger with no drop down design such as pedestal etc. Head clearance is likely to not be an issue unless your 6' plus. :)

knowing this....do you think a replacement still might work or is the current set up non-functional?
  • You might get one to fit but I think the problem will be clearance above the blades so air can circulate around them. That may be part of the problem with your existing fan.

As far as I know, there needs to be a certain amount of space between the blades and the ceiling for the fan to operate normally. There may not be that space in an RV and still have enough head room to walk under the fan.
