5th wheel wreck right by our campground

This is mostly a photo test but this picture was taken just outside Lake Big Mac by Ogallala Ne. Apparently the oncoming car gave the family towing the RV no choice but to take the ditch. They were coming head on. My son in law took a couple pics as we drove by. The other side was completely destroyed into a thousand pieces. The family was in the truck and escaped with only minor injuries. About 4 miles from here a family of 5 was killed when a semi ran full speed into the back of a van on I 80, apparently a distracted driver. Made all 14 of us a little nervous driving back to Lincoln. Was a rough weekend in Western Nebraska.

Here's the other side. Good think no body was riding in the camper!

  • We were just coming home from Myrtle Beach yesterday, while traveling on rt 701 , just north of Tabor City, we were just coming onto a short straight away with another fiver coming towards us.. There was a bone head passing him, left me nowhere to to go, .. I thanked god for 2 things..
    '#1 - disc brakes
#2 - a small enough shoulder and soft burn to get enough off the road..

Very Thankful that family escaped with minor injuries only... It could have been worse.

It can happen at any time. .. ...
  • The sad thing is, some insurance companies will charge this collision to the driver of the truck/5th wheel. I've had this happen to me on a freeway service road when a car that was beside me tried to change lanes right into my driver's door. I was HARD on the brakes and steering to the right to try to stay away from him and wound up curbing my right front wheel to miss him. No real damage other than some severe curb rash on an aluminum wheel, but I chased the guy down and got his insurance information.

To my surprise, the first thing his/my insurance companies asked was, "So, did he hit you?" When I responded "no", then it became my responsibility - there was no collision between the vehicles, so in their sight I just ran my vehicle into a curb for no reason. If the oncoming car didn't actually hit the truck/5th wheel before they took to the ditch, I could easily see them being caught in this same Catch 22 situation.

  • I just don't understand the lack of driving skills and the chances some of these drivers take.
Every driver and passenger takes a chance just being on the road. And it's going to get worse with all the added electronic distractions that most people just can't do without even while driving. :(

It appears the chances of your number coming up while on the road has better odds than your number hitting the lottery. :E
  • Around a corner and over a rise. Why is that a passing zone in the first place? Glad everybody mostly ok. I'd bet the other driver never stopped.
  • What an awful shame. My first thought was, I wonder if the other driver had adequate insurance? Glad the people are all ok, at least - that's the important thing.
  • All this, likely because some anxious moron just had to pass the car in front of him, just to be one car length ahead, behind the next guy, likely going the same speed.

I see it all the time here on our rural 2 lane highways. Stupid drivers taking everyone's lives into their hands, because they think their agenda is so important that they have to be first, the safety of everyone else on the road be dammed.

    Unsafe passing is a killer.

Shame to loose a nice 5er.
Wonder if the other car stuck around after causing this mess?
  • So sorry for the loss of fifth-wheel, can't tell about truck. But, the main thing, the family just got minor injuries. Good and quick thinking on driver.

Sorry for the other wreck where the family of 5 were killed.

I just don't understand the lack of driving skills and the chances some of these drivers take.
