I have asked for comments on this engine, since I recently bought one , a 2003 dually, not knowing it to be a 6.0.

NOW ..... I wish to MODIFY my question as follows .....

Have any of you actually OWNED one that DID NOT .... have serious problems with it ?

Thanks ... Richard

Thank you all for the advice. I am leaving the truck in God's hands. If I am to replace it. The answer will be shown. The reason we are going fulltime is an answer to a Circle maker prayer. Everything is left in God's hands.

I thank you for your patience and look forward to the time I see you on the road.

I'll admit to low mileage, but I had two (2) 2004 F350's with the 6.0. The first one was stolen with circa 60k miles on it. Sold the second one when I got out of the 5th wheel and it had about 45k miles.

(On edit)...meant to add that I never had any problem with either truck related to the dreaded 6.0..lost a seal on the rear differential once, but that was it.

Hi- I had a 2006 6.0 identical to my current signature truck. Bought it new in late 2005 when the model year was available and traded it for the current truck 6 years later. 90K on it with nothing done by the Ford service recommendations. Original tires, batteries and breaks. Great truck with a strong motor. Best of luck and happy holidays.

I bought my F350 diesel dually on July 1st, 2005. So far it has been a great truck. I pull a 32ft 5er and it performs great. Have never had any problems at all.

The problem with your scenario is that the 6 litre, unless abused, will most likely outlive the expectations albeit $5-6k MAY be needed to bullet proof. The engine will outlive the chassis and imagine the $$ saved if forgoing a $60k+ brand new truck PLUS taxes and insurance and reg fees each year on the newbie. Drive her, monitor her(with a good set of gauges) and love the simplicity of that generation engine. Btw, screw DEF. It's an expensive joke.

So thinking about trading it for a newer F-350 with 4 wheel drive. But only thinking at this time. I think it is a 50/50 chance of issues arising. But I did give my dealer an ear full when he told me my truck was worthless when it comes to a trade in. I wont share my reply to him. But he did lose my bussiness.

Take what would be a $1k/month truck payment and put it in the bank every month. Call it your truck replacement fund. Hit the road and if the time comes when it needs replacement you may have close to the replacement cost stashed along with the trade-in value.

If you were working or on vacation you would be pressed for time but fulltiming, nope. We'll be there when we get there if we can figure out where there is.

That sounds good in theory - but in reality you have consider that, A) It's not really $1K a month towards a new truck, because the 2007 is continuously depreciating by miles and year. Even though it's a diesel, once it hits 100K miles, it's pretty much at the bottom of the resale market. B) If it develops a major issue (shells the engine) and it's now out of warranty, it may only be worth scrap value unless you are prepared to put the $12K or so to re-engine to make it have value again (you just lost a good chunk of any resale value it had putting in the new engine), and C) You are generations behind in technology - not just the engine, but the transmissions and electronics.

If that 2007 with 60,000 miles is clean, you won't be anywhere near $1K a month to replace it with a 2015 given the trade value. Go for it, enjoy the new technology and warranty as you start your new lifestyle!

I would suggest you read online (Dieselstop.com) and be aware of the shortcoming of these engines. Keep your eyes open to any issues before they become problems. And find a really good independent diesel shop that's familiar with this engine to do maintenance on it.

As previously mentioned, the EGR coolers were source of problems. The biggest problem is with head problems--commonly fixed with "studding" the engine and using a new style head gasket. I would just leave the engine stock, and not try to hot rod it using tuners, etc.

Your alternative would be to put the truck on the retail market--if you can get near what you paid for it. Good luck!

I was talking to my diesel mechanic today. He was working on a truck with a blown 6.0, and the customer came in with a salvage yard 6.0. He's disassembling the engine and studding it. With the EGR mods and other required changes, it's a $3,800 job + the cost of the used engine--taking almost a full week labor.

My 6.0 bought new is still going fine. Many of the 03's can have the EGR valve unplugged and not turn on the CEL. Mine somehow became unplugged the day I got it..... I have changed oil every 5k miles because past that it will idle rough and fuel dilution is another concern. Run it hard and enjoy as I have for 11 years now.

Pull, with it but don't use these trucks for grocery shoppin' that will kill these newer diesels built within the last decade.

Agreed 100%. The 6 Litre loves to be treated like a nasty beech. Use her hard and don't look back. She's high maintenance, but if you follow the service schedules most of the dreaded problems won't appear. I hope you have the service records to see what was done with her already. Maybe with any luck the major bullet proofing has been done.
