Heavy half pickup
We are going to retire in 8-10 months and become fivers and would like to know if the half ton/ lite series 5th wheel with gvwr's of around 10,000 are truly towable by a half ton pickup?

The cost difference is minimal to move up to a 3/4 or 1 ton. Or are you saying you already have the 1/2 ton? (in which case give us the details and it's pretty easy to tell what the ratings are)
Diesel vs gas is a bit more complicated (and mildly religeous). Unless you are going to be doing a ton of miles or always in steep mountain terrain, one of the large gas engines will provide plenty of pull at a much lower up front cost. It's mostly a cost analysis at that point.
Some of us find the ride unsatisfactory in 3/4 or 1 ton trucks. especially if truck does double duty as a "daily driver". Please don't post on here that your 3/4 ton or 1 ton truck rides smooth. Because they don't ride anything like a 1/2 ton, and I don't expect them too!

Yes they are but at what cost. You would be better off with a truck with way more capacity instead of nearly maxed out both for safety and longevity of the pickup drivetrain.

If the sticker on your truck says you can tow it, then you can tow it.
But do you want to? We just got rid of a 24.5 ft lite 5 er. Our 1/2 ton was not happy towing it. Even read it could haul 8500. Wrong!

Not hardly, very few half tons can pull anywhere near their rated tow capacity without exceeding their payload or GVWR. Some half ton 4X4crew cabs(Dodge comes to mind),only come with he1200-1400 of psyload. The OP needs more truck or less trailer.
