Moving a 5th/W
A friend of mine has someone who needs a 5th/W moved about 280mi. What do you think I should get money wise. It's only one way.

Then just before we got it to his house, a tire blew out!! Upon closer examination I noticed all the other tires had sidewall cracks, I'm surprised we made it with only one blow out.
So just be careful, know the shape of the unit you are pulling and realize the legal implications of an accident or other breakdown.- I like to think friends of my friends are my friends too.
Assuming I wasn't taking off from work or something, I would ask the new friend to ride along and fill the tank on his card. Fill it again when we get home. If my new friend wasn't willing to accompany me, I would not get involved. jamway wrote:

I did just what you are talking about this last winter. It was not as far only about 30 miles.
The only thing I got was a thank you and that was all I wanted. Two weeks ago that friend did some work for me and all he wanted was a thank you for the work.
We were both happy and still good friends.
I have never done anything like this that I didn't get paid many times over what it cost.
Anything other than for a friend and fuel, you get into a real grey area of the law and liability if there is an accident while moving. The fuel may also be grey, and that would be considered payment for hauling, making you and your TV commercial. :S- A close friend, no problem. Any of my close friends would more than compensate for costs incurred.
A simple aquaintence or friend of friends, no way. Primarily liability issues doing something commercial on personal insurance. Moving it because of stranding by the side of the road would put a different view on the move. That would be more of a rescue, which I have done many times on the water, than a simple move from one secure place to another. - Yep, it must be a Texas thing.

I have never done anything like this that I didn't get paid many times over what it cost.- Zero chance I'd do it for all the reasons mentioned and more. I've had freinds ask me to tow cars on trailers and said no. Liability is far to high.
- A guy that did some work for me called me up and asked if I would accept a job moving a fifth wheel.
Without asking any questions I declined the job, for all the reasons that have been mentioned in this thread.

Might want to check that out. In Canada, the only thing that carries over from the truck is Public Liability. If you want Collision and Comprehensive to cover repairs to the trailer if you are "at fault" in an accident, you need a separate policy specifically for the trailer.
If the owner of the trailer doesn't have Collision or Comprehensive, I wouldn't touch it.- I just won't move 5th wheels for folks. A buddy of mine moves several each spring and fall from a CG we stay at in the summer. He only moves them 5 or 10 miles but he does it for a flat rate of $50.00 each tow. I just feel like there is too much liability involved. If someone wants to own a 5th wheel then they can go out and buy a HD truck to pull it like I had to. Otherwise go buy a MH or class C.
The other problem is, who really knows what someone else's fiver really weighs? If they don't own a HD truck to pull their own rig they sure have never had it weighed. You might hook up to something with your 1 ton SRW truck and about half way through the trip discover the 5th wheel actually weighs about 25,000 pounds!
